Matt Richtel's "Hooked" starts with an intriguing set up: a cafe explosion, a mysterious woman, and a note from a long-dead love. With a hook like that, this could have been an excellent book. Unfortunately, it quickly falls apart, eventually devolving into a total mess that stretches suspension of disbelief. Utterly disappointing. (show less)

I expected a rip-rollicking thriller set in familiar surrounds what I got was a pedestrian stumble over rutted ground with a god complex thrown in to muck it up. Obviously, not my favorite read of 2008.
