Another excellent example of Thomas Hardy's beautiful imagery and a very good story to go along with it. I think this is my favorite Thomas Hardy ... (show more)
Far from the Madding Crowd (Modern Library Classics)
Far from the Madding Crowd, Hardy’s passionate tale of the beautiful, headstrong farmer Bathsheba Everdene and her three suitors, firmly established the thirty-four-year-old writer as a popular novelist. Far from the Madding Crowd, Hardy’s passionate tale of the beautiful, headstrong farmer Bathsheba Everdene and her three suitors, firmly established the thirty-four-year-old writer as a popular novelist. According to Virginia Woolf, “The subject was right; the method was right; the poet and the countryman, the sensual man, the sombre reflective man, the man of learning, all enlisted to produce a book which . . . must hold its place among the great English novels.” Introducing the fictional name of “Wessex” to describe Hardy’s legendary countryside, this early masterpiece draws a vivid picture of rural life in southwest England.
This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the 1912 Wessex edition and features Hardy’s map of Wessex. (show less)

At the beginning of Alice In Wonderland, Alice is bored when she peeks at her sisters book and finds it completely without any conversation. About this book I felt the opposite way – all it was was painful conversations between Bathsheba and one of the men interested in courting her. All the real action was written quickly and skimmed over and I just got so sick and tired of all the characters discussing everything over and over and never actually doing anything. I cared not at all for any of the stupid, selfish characters and was really glad to have finished it. (show less)

Beautiful, vivid imagery for the background of this excellent work of fiction! I love his style of writing and the details he includes in describing the landscape.

One of my favourite books. First read it when I was 12, and have loved Thomas Hardy's work ever since. He is often too verbose with his imagery, but that's more than compensated for by his ingenius prose and symbolism.
