Dr. Ben Kazin is a brilliant acrheologist. Louren Sturvesant is rich, impulsive, and physically imposing, everything Ben is not. Now, the to men--friends, competitors and partner--are searching for the legendary lost city of Opet, built by an Egyptian culture that reached Africa two thousand years ago, then vanished completely.

For Ben, the expedition is a chance to prove a controversial thesis. For Louren, it is a chance to spend milions--and make it all back in gold and glory. But what awaits them is an astounding discovery, a seige of terror, and an act of betrayal that will tear the two men apart and bind them together forever...

Hidden beneath water, jungle, and blood-red cliffs is a lost world where two men and a beautiful woman were caught in a furious battle of passions two thousands years ago, but which has begun once again....

A favorite book I always revisit: Egyptian history from an archeological vantage point with beautifully worded descriptions evoking Egypt's magical quality of seeming at once a past, present, and future place. The rich and verdant mysticism of the Nile, the Pyramids, pharaohs, art, and power, all experienced through the eyes of a classic triangle of friends in whom we can recognize ourselves and our desires, gender aside. In this tale the triangle is comprised of two men and one woman with heterosexual competition for her, love and friendship among all, and realistic homoerotic undertones. But best of all, experiencing Egypt as a dream within a dream becomes the book's reality. Some reviews dismiss the plot as predictable in places, but that is what makes it poignant, echoing times we've recognized what was next -- especially in relationships -- yet continued as if powerless to stop a speeding train. I love this story! (show less)

Wilbur smith is fast becoming my all time favorite author.
In The Sunbird, we meet Ben, an archeologist and Louren, his best friend. They uncover a lost city and things start getting interesting.
With every day that passes a new discovery is made in the "City of the Moon", a City that was destroyed almost 2000 years ago.
    They uncover vast treasures.

I found this one as easy to read as any of Wilbur's other novels, and this one was almost as interesting as the first of the Courtney novels, HOWEVER, it cannot be compared since it is a whole different sort of novel.
This was my first novel by Smith that did not revolve mostly around mining and i have to admit that i am not in the least disappointed.
I cannot wait to continue my journey with Wilbur Smith at my side, only 24 more Smith books to get through. (show less)

  • This book came highly recommended to me. While the plot was interesting (South African archaeology team discovers a lost Carthaginian city on their own continent), I began to see the twist fairly early on ... and the action dragged a wee bit at times. I enjoyed the archaeological bent of the tale, and would probably give another work by Smith a try. I just wasn't crazy about this one.
