In his first case since he left the LAPDs Open Unsolved Unit for the prestigious Homicide Special squad, Harry Bosch is called out to investigate a murder that may have chilling consequences for national security. A doctor with access to a dangerous radioactive substance is found murdered in the trunk of his car. Retracing his steps, Harry learns that a large quantity of radioactive cesium was stolen shortly before the doctors death. With the cesium in unknown hands, Harry fears the murder could be part of a terrorist plot to poison a major American city. Soon, Bosch is in a race against time, not only against the culprits, but also against the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI (in the form of Harrys one-time lover Rachel Walling), who are convinced that this case is too important for the likes of the LAPD. It is Boschs job to prove all of them wrong. (show less)

This is a much shorter book than usual from Michael Connelly but then the story was written for the New York Times to be published in serial form. The book follows Harry Bosch as he attempts to solve a murder on "The Overlook" but he stumbles on a threat to national security, hence the arrival of the FBI to mess up his scene. Cue Rachel Walling with whom Bosch has had no contact since the Echo Park case.
While I was initially wondering where Connelly was going with the plot, I found myself racing through the book at break neck speed. It is a really quick read but that does not take from the mystery and intrigue you would expect from a Harry Bosch story. If I had to pick a flaw, it'd be the brevity of it (and a few typos but that's probably a publishing error). But that'd just be being picky!!!! (show less)

Personly I felt this was a poor showing for Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch. The story line just didnt seen to twist and turn like many of Harrys previous outings. Still, none the less an enjoyable light weight read Idle for reading around a pool under a hot Egyption Sky as I did. (show less)

The Overlook is an easy read that requires little concentration and is also light weight, making it an decent book to read on an airplane. It is the story of a Los Angeles Homicide detective, called in the middle of the night scene of a murder. As the story unfolds the reader sees how the L.A. police and the FBI (under the auspices of Homeland Security) squabble over territory for no apparent reason, but in typical fashion for this style of story. The fact that the characters’ motivations are not well developed might be forgiven due to the fact that the book is small and easy enough to be considered a “light read”, and therefore should not be held to the same standard as a classic such as Great Expectations. In fact, one who reads this book with great expectations is bound to be disappointed.

You might like this book if you have little time to devote to reading but are interested in a quick mystery that requires little concentration or attention to detail. Take it with you the next time you travel or when you don’t want to devote your full attention to your reading and I doubt you’ll be disappointed. Just don’t expect to be able to write a thesis on this book; there won’t be enough material. (show less)

I’ve read a number of the Michael Connelly novels and have on the whole thoroughly enjoyed his writing style and plot lines. Overlook is the 13th book featuring Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch and although a good story well written it is not a good as many of the previous books. The main character has been well developed and is always an interesting focal point for the investigation. The main character has been well developed and is always an interesting focal point for the investigation. I have read many of the titles in this series out of order and it has not affected my enjoyment of the story although with this book I was glad to have read the previous novel Echo Park (a top draw Connelly/Bosch outing) as much was made of the relationships of Bosch with special agent Rachel walling, ex-partners Jerry Edgar and Kiz Ryder and the chief of police.

As I said it was a good story well written and worth the time (It is not a long novel) the main problem was that I had the major twist in the plot from a very early stage and knew where the book was heading. (show less)
