A Formatio book. As a society, we are no less obsessed with the immediate than when Eugene Peterson first wrote this Christian classic. If anything, email and the Internet may have intensified our quest for the quick fix. But Peterson's time-tested prescription for discipleship remains the same--a long obedience in the same direction.Tucked away in the Hebrew Psalter, Peterson discovered "an old dog-eared songbook," the Songs of Ascents that were sung by pilgrims on their way up to worship in Jerusalem. In these songs (Psalms 120-134) Peterson finds encouragement for modern pilgrims as we learn to grow in worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing. This 20th anniversary edition of A Long Obedience in the Same Direction features these Psalms in Peterson's widely acclaimed paraphrase, The Message. He also includes an epilogue in which he reflects on the themes of this book and his ministry during the twenty years since its original publication. (show less)

I now have a new favorite Peterson book! Well, new to me as the book was written almost 30 years ago. What a beautiful work our brother Peterson has given the world. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an honest, thoughtful exploration of the Christian life. Peterson takes the Psalms of Ascent and unpacks them in his typical way (imagine a leisurely conversation with an old friend whilst walking along a meandering path in the woods). I love his style of communication... and this book hits the nail right on the head. The title says enough to get a good feel for the work "A long obedience in the same direction", which is a quote borrowed from Nietzsche of all people!

This book, along with "Christ Plays in 10,000 Places" is my favorite work from Eugene Peterson. A must read for anyone who wants to read Peterson at his best... and for those who are desirous of long term spiritual growth. I am a better Christian for having spent the week reading this classic work. Thanks be to God. (show less)

Peterson takes fifteeen psalms called the Songs of Ascents (120-134) and provides a discipleship theme for each one of them. He brings skillful insight to each psalm making it more accessible for the reader, especially those who are intimidated by poetry of the psalms. Along with helping the reader to understand the psalm he also makes it relevant for our journey of faith with God. Peterson's books are always worther reading. This book is no exception. A meditative and devotional application of the Psalms of Ascent (120 – 134) to Christian discipleship. With the growth of the internet and social networking, the iPod culture, and growing consumerism, the subtitle “discipleship in an instant society” is perhaps more pertinent now than when the book was first published in 1980. It’s a refreshing break from the bigger is better, efficiency is king, and results orientated approaches to discipleship.

Peterson put a lot of research into this book, but helpfully keeps his arguments free of theological jargon. Sometimes I wonder if this approach is applying his exegesis is consistent and sometimes he makes grand unqualified statements that seem a bit simplistic, but these are minor complaints. This is a book that I can return to time after time and still find it fresh and relevant; it should be read by anybody involved in discipleship. (show less)

Peterson's format feels a little constraining, and sometimes he stretches the psalms a little unnaturally to get where he wants to go. But on the whole the book is worth a read. I found chapter 11 on perseverance and chapter 12 on hope to be particularly poignant. Peterson's writing is clear and honest, and sometimes biting. More than once I found myself on the wrong end of his insightful words of warning borne out of his years in the mission field. As a pastor Peterson reminds me how in... (show more)

As a pastor Peterson reminds me how integral joy is to my work, and warns me not to take myself too seriously, or get into the habit of complaint. (show less)
