"AN OLD-FASHIONED, BIG-HEARTED NOVEL . . . with its epic yearning caught in the 19th century, somewhere between Trollope and Twain . . . The rich detail makes for vintage Irving."

--The Boston Sunday Globe

Victims of tragedy, violence, and injustice, their lives seem more interesting and full of thought-provoking dilemmas than the lives of many real people."

--The Houston Post

"John Irving's sixth and best novel . . . He is among the very best storytellers at work today. At the base of Irving's own moral concerns is a rare and lasting regard for human kindness."

--The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Entertaining and affecting . . . John Irving is the most relentlessly inventive writer around. He proliferates colorful incidents and crotchets of character. . . . A truly astounding amount of artistry and ingenuity."

John Irving's writing is difficult to describe... In every book you become one of the family of characters and are along for the journey through situations that can have you howling with laughter, reading the letters his character wrote to the utility companies (much like my own), or the vivid image he created of Hurricane Doris in The Hotel New Hampshire. In every book you become one of the family of characters and are along for the journey through situations that can have you howling with laughter, reading the letters his character wrote to the utility companies (much like my own), or the vivid image he created of Hurricane Doris in The Hotel New Hampshire. Years ago when I read these the first time I used to laugh so hard I woke up everyone in the house! When I gave my sister and my ex-wife The World According to Garp, my favorite book of all time, to read, neither liked it. I was stunned! One day we saw an article "The 100 Greatest Books Of All Time", I told my wife "GARP WILL BE IN THERE!! "No way!", she said. It was #50, and an all time classic that I would recommend to everyone, or at least every man. Each Irving book is filled with rich characters that draw you into their life journey; Owen Meany, Hotel, Cider House (what a screenplay adaptation and all star cast!!- the BEST I've ever seen put to film)... always excellent writing that makes you wonder how he does it... miraculous! This was my first Irving novel, after which I went and bought EVERY other book he wrote and read them all in succession, every one as different in most ways though many have one central character; the wrestler and writer himself. Every time I went to the Mall I asked Walden Books if they had anything new by him or did they know of one coming soon... (show less)

There are few books that I have read that I never ever want to end. This is one of them. I finished this book in about five days, and I could not get enough of it. I can't remember if a book has ever made me cry before... but this book made me cry really hard. It was so amazing, it might be one of my favorites. Irving writes in such detail, I love it. I love how I felt like I knew every single character so well. I watched the movie today and I felt like I didn't even know anyone and that Hom... (show more)

I love how I felt like I knew every single character so well. I watched the movie today and I felt like I didn't even know anyone and that Homer had no personality... this book is definitely WAY better than the movie. This is the first book that I have read by Irving and I am so excited to read more of his work. "Let us be happy for Doctor Larch. Doctor Larch has found a family. Good night, Doctor Larch" (show less)
