The Soul of Rumi is renowned poet Coleman Barks' first major assemblage of newly translated Rumi poems since his bestselling < The Essential Rumi.

Coleman Barks presents entirely new translations of Rumi's poems, published for the first time in The Soul of Rumi. The poems range over the breadth of Rumi's themes: silence, emptiness, play, God, peace, grief, sexuality, music, to name just a few. Lovely translations of the greatest poet. He miss categorizes his poems though which could cause some confusion. In the tradition of Attar's "The Conference of the Birds" Rumi's poems were a path to be followed step by step. Unfortunately, in the west we tend to view each poem as a complete truth. This leads to hipsters quoting Rumi without realizing that these truths aren't just meant to make you feel better about yourself. Nevertheless, if one approaches these poems humbly they can illuminate the edges.

No, it's a flop!

The truly amazing thing about Rumi is that even "translated" by a hack like Barks, something of his genius still manages to shine through.

A nice book to have around if you enjoy poetry. Reading a poem or two of his every now and then is just what i need sometimes.

When I am looking for answers to a question, I play the "Rumi Oracle" game. Flip the book open to any page and read it. Chances are you'll find a helpful answer there. Try it!

Seriously, though, if you're into Rumi - or even if you've never heard of him but like poetry anyway - this is a good book to start with.
