Pursuit of God
During a train trip from Chicago to Texas in the late 1940s, A.W. Tozer began to write The Pursuit of God. He wrote all night, and when the train arrived at his destination, the rough draft was done. The depth of this book has made it an enduring favorite.

This book challenged me greatly and inspired me deeply the first time I read it. I was a young Christian, and Tozer’s eloquent call for deeper faith and stronger pursuit of God thrilled me and grew me. Those elements are still present, but they are also now tempered with some other thoughts in my mind as I gave the book a more thoughtful reading.

My concerns:
Tozer writes in such a way as to denigrate the study of theology. Perhaps this is not intentional. Without question, some who study and study have a sterile and bookish faith that will not bring anyone close to God. However, this is not the fault of theology, rather it is the fault of the person. In my own life, my study of theology is a primary key to the deepening of my Christian walk and the strengthening of my faith.
Tozer also draws pictures and conclusions at times without scriptural support. For example, he depicts God’s call for Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a shield for Abraham against idolizing his son. While this may be what God was doing, Tozer lacks biblical support for that hypothesis.
My affirmations:
My goodness, this book still has a great number of points to be praised. Tozer attacks the evil of pride in chapter after chapter. He exposes our love of ourselves and of our worldly amusements in such a way as to help us to see just how deep runs our pride and worldliness.
Tozer constantly points us to God. At one point, his discussion of fellowship is tempered with the reminder that those who want fellowship will better achieve it if they are all focused on God instead of being focused on fellowship.
Tozer’s passion for God comes through in this book, and it is refreshing and challenging. One who reads this book feels himself to be in the presence of a man who truly loves the Lord and who truly wants others to love the Lord too. It is contagious.
Would I recommend this book to others? You bet! I do, however, want others to read carefully. Be careful not to buy into an anti-theology bias as you glean the passion for an unbounded faith. The positives far outweigh the negatives here, but negatives are here. So, read this book, but do so with the care that you should use when reading any book that is not divinely inspired. (show less)

The Book's Content
Hi, my fellow Facebook users! I just want you to know that A.W. Tozer was off the chain, and I love his books called "The Pursuit of God' and "The Pursuit of Man." I loved what I read about purusing God in his first book ("The Pursuit of God"). He spoke about the blessedness of possessing nothing but God as the number one priority in your temple and heart. He [God] deserves to be the one seated in the throne of your heart, and not only that, but He's the only one that should be there anyway!!! God is so totally off the chain. He'll heal you from all pain. I truly know for myself that what my chaplain here at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center said about God is absolutely and totally true. Here it is: "Jesus will heal you everywhere you hurt." I know because He's healed me in some very painful and secretive areas. I don't even wanna go into all of that, but anyway, oh yes I do know His power for myself! Thank God for it. You can know it too. I suggest that you not only buy this book called "The Pursuit of God", but also buy its sequel {which could've and should've came first according to my pastor and I} "The Pursuit of Man" and any other books that could definitely be foundational in a believer changing their life for the Lord. Now that's what I'm talking about!! See ya. I'll holla at you all later. You all be blessed and stay safe. Is that a deal? Well, all right. I've gotta go now. Bye-bye.
Sincerely,
Gideon Joshua Parker about 1 year ago
