In many ways, Carrie Parker is like an other eight-year-old -- playing make-believe, dreading school, dreaming of faraway places. But even her imaginative mind can't shut out the realities of her impoverished North Carolina home or help her protect her younger sister, Emma.

In many ways, Carrie Parker is like an other eight-year-old -- playing make-believe, dreading school, dreaming of faraway places. But even her imaginative mind can't shut out the realities of her impoverished North Carolina home or help her protect her younger sister, Emma.

By turns achingly naive and utterly pragmatic, Carrie has been shaped by the loss of her beloved daddy and by a drunken stepfather and her emotionally absent mother. Charting an astonishing course of survival for herself and Emma, she hopes to transform their lives into one more closely resembling the storybooks she treasures.

But after the sisters' plan to run away from home unravels, their world takes a shocking turn -- and one shattering moment ultimately reveals a truth that leaves everyone reeling.

Narrated with the simplicity and unabashed honestly of a child's perspective, Me & Emma is a vivid portrayal of heartbreaking loss of innocence, an indomitable spirit and incredible courage -- a story that will resonate with readers long after they've turned the final page. (show less)

Amazing book that takes a turn no-one could ever have predicted. Me & Emma is told through the eyes of Carrie Parker an eight year old girl growing up in a small town in North Carolina. After her daddy dies her Mum remarries the abusive drunkard Richard and the story is about the daily abuse suffered by Carrie and her sister Emma, through poverty and at the hands of their struggle and their struggle to get away from it. You could never imagine how it is all going to end and it is a book I can highly recommend.

This book was a heartbreaking account, told through the eyes of an eight year old, about the abuse and neglect that she and her sister go through after her father dies. Her emotionally distant mother marries an physically/mentally/sexually abusive man who begins to torment Caroline and her sister Emma.

The tale told is different from many mainstream novels, as it is told from a child's point of view. The things that these girls go through are hard to stomach sometimes. The inability to protect themselves or be protected by a caring adult is frustrating. There are points when you believe the book is going to end on a good note, and then you are hit one more time with reality. The book doesn't sugarcoat anything, including Caroline's personality as it plummets from hopeful to hateful, an emotion that an eight year old should never have to feel.

Overall, this was an interesting and quick read. I have mixed emotions about recommending it for everyone, but I do recommend it if you are looking for a quick, heavy read, that will make you sit up and think. (show less)

Reviews on the jacket compared this book to "Bastard out of Carolina" and "Ellen Foster", but both of those were far superior books in my opinion (and I'm probably biased, because both of those are among my favorite books of all time). "Me and Emma" was a page-turner that I blew through pretty quickly because I wanted to see what would happen, where "Bastard" and "Ellen" are more character-driven books where a reader can just revel in the beauty of the language alone, regardless of plot development. "Me and Emma" was pretty good; Carrie sounded like a real authentic child, and I enjoyed the kinder-hearted characters she met along the way. I was frustrated by the one-dimensional quality of her mother, who seemed like a cardboard cutout until the book's climax. The ending was totally unexpected, which was great, but it also felt way too sudden...I would have liked to see a little more of Carrie and her mother after the plot twists, since they definitely changed everything. Maybe she left us hanging so she could write a sequel... (show less)

  • I enjoyed the simplicity of the story being told from the perspective of the child - an interesting twist that was heartbreaking; yet, left me feeling sad, angry, tearful, and applauding the indomitable spirit and courage that was exuded by the character.
