A must for all fans of superhero comics, especially the most recent, rather baroque versions. Grossman seems to have an encylopedia of knowledge of... (show more)
Soon I Will Be Invincible: A Novel

Over the years he's tried to take over the world in every way imaginable: doomsday devices of all varieties (nuclear, thermonuclear, nanotechnological) and mass mind control. He's traveled backwards in time to change history, forward in time to escape it. He's commanded robot armies, insect armies, and dinosaur armies. Fungus army. Army of fish. Of rodents. Alien invasions. All failures. But not this time. This time it’s going to be different...
Fatale is a rookie superhero on her first day with the Champions, the world's most famous superteam. She's a patchwork woman of skin and chrome, a gleaming technological marvel built to be the next generation of warfare. Filling the void left by a slain former member, we watch as Fatale joins a team struggling with a damaged past, having to come together in the face of unthinkable evil.
Soon I Will Be Invincible is a thrilling first novel; a fantastical adventure that gives new meaning to the notions of power, glory, responsibility, and (of course) good and evil. (show less)

There are some good things about this book but in the end I found it a bit bland. Grossman tries to create a parody world of many famous and established superhero cliches , but the attempt itself feels a bit cliched. It would have felt more original if it had been published in the early 90's, but given the recent decade of comics and superhero movies, the book already feels outdated.
It also felt a little inconsistent in the two stories it told. The book is split between the first person accounts of a super-villain (Dr. Impossible) and a super-hero (Fatale). Dr. Impossible's story is much more entertaining and often comical but never enough. It could have been pushed so much further to make it a great and entertaining story. It always felt like just a half effort though. The other half of the book, Fatale's super-hero persepective on events is told in a serious and realistic fashion (this is the inconsistency). If Dr. Impossible's side was just a half effort, Fatale's is a quarter effort.
There was/is a lot of potential here so I'd still be interested in reading another Grossman book. This one however (to an active comic nerd) falls quite short of the mark already set by great comics in recent time. (show less)

A book for the comic book fan in all of us. Similar in tone to The Invincibles and almost as great. Plus the cover alone helped a friend I loaned it to get laid one night...

I saw a guy with this book one night at a bar and just from the cover and title alone had to ask him about it. As a self-professed former semi-comic book nerdish person, I can really get into the genre of over the top good vs. over the top evil. Grossman does an amazing job of throwing you right in the middle of a world populated by many, many people with super-human abilities; some were given their powers through freak accidents, some gained abilities through mystical artifacts, some are j... I saw a guy with this book one night at a bar and just from the cover and title alone had to ask him about it. As a self-professed former semi-comic book nerdish person, I can really get into the genre of over the top good vs. over the top evil. Grossman does an amazing job of throwing you right in the middle of a world populated by many, many people with super-human abilities; some were given their powers through freak accidents, some gained abilities through mystical artifacts, some are just aliens, visiting our planet. The one thing that all have in common are weaknesses, whether an aversion to water or maybe just plain old shyness. Dr Impossible, our main villian, suffers from the newly diagnosed "Malign Hypercognition Disorder" (In other words, he is an evil genius).
The narrative bounces back and forth between Dr. Impossible and the newest hero to join The Champions, a super team, as the two draw closer to the inevitable final clash. We learn their origin stories, their fears and the secret bond that they share.
This book delves into the superhero world without parody, giving realy human emotions and feelings to a world with super human abilities, and damn if I don't hope Grossman lets us back in soon! (show less)
