I highly recommend this! A keeper in ANY library collection.. What stood out for me the first time round was Purpose #2: formed for Gods family.. And how fellowship is imperative fo spiritual growth.. Im a "happy to be by myself" type of person, but when i read this, i GOT it :) the best use of life is love.. and you dont love people from afar..

So i applied it..And wow! Iv really begun to appreciate the awesome diversity in the body of Christ and just in people in general.. I may not agree with eveything, but thats part of maturity isnt it?.. Accepting our differences and celebrating our "uniqueness".. Lol and that was just from purpose #2 :) Il be reading this book again.. And again.. :) there is so much to glean.. Love it! p.s its important and more effective to do it over 40days and reflect on each day.. (show less)

This is a disgusting book. The goal of this book is to make you a slave. Don't take my word for it I'll just read straight from the book: "Worship isn't for you. It's for God p.66, God smiles when we obey him wholeheartedly, You have no right to argue with your Creator. You are merely a clay pot shaped by a potter p.75 " Or the chapters titles "Thinking like a Servant " and "How Real Servants Act".

For me, the most revolting thing about the book came on p.80 and this theme was repeated throughout the book "Surrendered people obey God's word even if it doesn't make sense." A few sentences before that Warren says "God would not waste the mind he gave you. God doesn't want a lot of mindless robots following him." Anyone who doesn't see the clear contradiction between those two sentences is a fool. And Warren put them on the same page.

Warren says it over and over and over again, the purpose of life isn't to learn, or to teach or even to just enjoy life, but to OBEY God. It doesn't matter what your own thoughts are or what you think of yourself, it only matters what the Great Self Appointed Tyrant in the Sky thinks of you and your life. According to this book, your only goal in life is to be forever groveling and praising this God and doing your damnedest to get others to do likewise.

There are some decent lessons in the book but all of them are corrupted by the awful dogma of Warren and his twisted theology. The book is designed to get around your intellect, it even says at some points that thinking and doubting are bad things, and go straight for your weakness and insecurities with an open attempt to try and convince you that you and everything you value are worthless without the Dictators permission. Only a fool, only someone who WANTS TO BE A SLAVE would get anything out of this book. (show less)

I evaluate the book in the manner God looks at our lives- are you serving God or serving yourself. The book opens with the basic truth that life is not about you. Purpose Driven Life provides spiritual food and guides you through a great deal of Bible verses. The book illuminates five areas of spiritual health that speak to God's purpose for our lives. They are: Worship, Fellowship, Christ-like Discipleship, Ministry and Evangelism. Without a relationship with Christ you can't accomplish ... (show more)

Without a relationship with Christ you can't accomplish your God given purposes nor have spiritual health. I thank Bro. Warren for writing the book and I recommend it for those seeking a mature Christianity. For those who would scoff at the book I recommend that you write your personal purpose and line it up with God's plans for your life. Lastly, I learned about myself from reading the book that I am too self-centered, and need to be more focused on eternity. What we do today has an effect on eternity. Get it right. (show less)

Rick Warren addresses one of life's foundational questions: "What is my purpose in life?" It is a question that eveyone must answer. Warren writes forty shart chapters (4-5 pages in length) as he helps to explore the fact that our lives are not accidents but were intended to have God driven purpose by living the great commandment and great commssion.

I believe that every Christian should read this book. It is a basic primer of Christianity.

Reading the book served as fresh air vis-a-vis my cynicism and my mundane concerns.

    Cherry picking his citations?

I kind of felt like this criticism on wikipedia was kind of unfair. It reads "Warren jumps from one Bible version to another, cherry-picking whichever paraphrase or translation supports whatever point he attempts to convey." I don't really feel like this was a major issue in the book.
