The Spine of the World: The Legend of Drizzt, Book XII (The Legend of Drizzt)
Join the world's most famous drow elf in the penultimate chapter of the Legend of Drizzt series!
Spending time in the unimaginable torture chambers of the Abyss for even a day would be enough to break even the heartiest soul, and the barbarian Wulfgar was there for years. When he returns, his friends find him a changed man, and not changed for the better. But Wulfgar's road to redemption is one he must travel on his own, even if it leads to the bottle.

Some people didn't like this one, but I'm not sure what their problem was. I have read the opening journal over and over, and it has helped clear my head many times. I love the exploration of Wulfgar's character, and I think this book was wonderful.

The steady virtue of Drizzt that normally characterizes Salvatore's novels is replaced by the tortured decline of Wulfgar and the juvenile mix of love and lust by an entirely new pair of characters. The overall cast of less than virtuous characters find their maturation in the common good, mercy, and a particularly Christian notion of sacrifice. A good read, Salvatore's character development at its best.
