A Storm of Swords

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King’s Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world....

But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others--a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . . (show less)

Possibly the best book in the saga. Exciting is a word that cannot fit the feelings the book awakes. If George R.R. Martin is defining with A Song of Ice and Fire a new wave in the fantasy narrative is a matter of time. The fact that he has reached a peak only visited by writers like Dunsany, Moorcock, Donaldson or Leguin is far beyond any doubt. Only a few books could get the reader as sensitive as Martin makes you when reading the Red Wedding story. If you cry when it happens don't worry, M... (show more)

Only a few books could get the reader as sensitive as Martin makes you when reading the Red Wedding story. If you cry when it happens don't worry, Martin is swinging that magic wand that touch his novels, the same that touched the other two books. If the fourth and the forthcoming books are touched too it's something that I'm expecting to check. Let Martin drowns you in the waters of the conflict in Westeros, let the dragons take you away to the shores of this great novel. (show less)

And George R R Martin's epic masterpiece continues to get better and better. A Storm of Swords is the third and in my opinion best installment of A Song of Ice and Fire to date. So many of the plots that have moved forward throughout the series are coming to a head. I am going to assume those reading this review have read at least the first two books in the series... (if not stop reading). This story has a strong focus on Jon Snow and his interactions with the wildlings which builds and continues to be a brilliant subplot. I love all of his interactions with Ygritte "You know nothing Jon Snow." As we left off from the last book Tyrion has saved Kings Landing (with the help of his Lord Father coming at the last second). In this story we learn with far greater understanding of where Tyrion came from. We get more up close with Cersei and Lord Tywin as well as gain perspective from Jaime Lannister (his scenes are among the best in this book). I would say of my 10 favorite scenes in the series 6 are in this book (and that is not to take away from any other books which have great books). In this book Arya's plot really starts to pick up. This is the first Epic Fantasy novel I have given 5 stars, I really think Martin hit a homerun with A Storm of Swords. (show less)

Read this ohe faster than the first two. I enjoyed the focus of specific characters of this book. But wow, we lost so many important characters. Can't wait to see what happens in Book 4.

Still entertaining as ever, and one of the best Fantasy novels I've read. However, it took me longer to read this book. As the saga continues, a lot of things finally fits the puzzle that GRRM has created. Look forward to book 4.
