Robin Hood meets the Rat Pack when the best and the brightest of M.I.T.'s math students and engineers take up blackjack under the guidance of an eccentric mastermind. Their small blackjack club develops from an experiment in counting cards on M.I.T.'s campus into a ring of card savants with a system for playing large and winning big. In less than two years they take some of the world's most sophisticated casinos for more than three million dollars. But their success also brings with it the formidable ire of casino owners and launches them into the seedy underworld of corporate Vegas with its private investigators and other violent heavies.
Filled with tense action, high stakes, and incredibly close calls, Bringing Down the House is a nail-biting read that chronicles a real-life Ocean's Eleven. It's one story that Vegas does not want you to read. (show less)

This book is definitely better then the movie 21. Along with the the irritating replacement of asian characters with white characters the movie also misses the best parts of this book covering the excitement of the vegas ride and the people they met along the way and also how much money was being brought in and how. Movies have a really hard time capturing vegas experience for some reason. (show less)

I picked this book out of lost and found and read it only because I recognized the story from a movie trailer.
Since this is Mezrich's first attempt at non-fiction I suppose I should not be suprised that this book reads like fiction. The way scenes are set, the changing from past to present, even the direct touch of the narrator (author), all add to the feel of fiction. Whether this is good or bad, it does make the book a fast read.

My biggest gripe with the book is the ending. Sudden, little or no resolution, and even the essay offered at the close is really in danger of being redundant after reading the story. I suppose that is the draw back to writing "real-life" stories.
All in all a good Vegas Mega-Resort pool side read. It certainly won't help your blackjack game, but who cares, it won't hurt it either. (show less)

I picked this book up at the library book store for $.50. I had been interested in reading it for a while and was looking for a quick read. This book was indefinitely a quick read.
An interesting story with lots of colorful characters. It is of its time, meaning it's about one team of many from MIT at one point of it's history. The book doesn't really delve into the rich blackjack history of MIT. It served it's purpose only taking me a few days to read and I wasn't left feeling short ch... (show more)

Which is better - the book or the movie?
I was just wondering if anyone had seen the film adaptation of this book, "21"? It looks entertaining, so I wanted to know if anyone had already seen it. Which is better??
