For over twenty-five years John Piper has trumpeted the truth that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” He calls it Christian Hedonism. The problem is that many people, after being persuaded, find that this truth is both liberating and devastating.

For over twenty-five years John Piper has trumpeted the truth that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” He calls it Christian Hedonism. The problem is that many people, after being persuaded, find that this truth is both liberating and devastating.

It’s liberating because it endorses our inborn desire for joy. And it’s devastating because it reveals that we don’t desire God the way we should. What do you do when you discover the good news that God wants you to be content in him, but then find that you aren’t?

If joy in God were merely the icing on the cake of Christian commitment, this book would be insignificant. But Piper argues that joy is so much more. Our being satisfied in God is necessary to show God’s worthiness and to sustain sacrifices of love.

Jesus endured the cross for the joy that was set before him. He tasted it. It sustained him through the deepest suffering. His Father was glorified. His people were saved. That is what joy in God does.

The absolutely urgent question becomes: What can I do if I don’t have it? With a pastor’s heart and with radical passion for the glory of Christ, John Piper helps you answer that question.

A friend of mine gave me this book in Bible college after we had a rather lengthy and candid discussion about our passion (or lack thereof) for God. I was constantly frustrated because I could make myself do my Christian duties like giving, personal evangelism, Bible reading, prayer, etc. but I was not passionate about them. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that I greatly desired the performance of those disciplines (because I thought that the blessing of God would not rest on me if I didn't do them) but I did not greatly desire the God to whom the disciplines were ultimately to be directed. God used Piper's Biblical, rational, and weighty teaching to replace my focus on ministerial success, "the power of God," and being a disciplined Christian with a single vision for our great God and the pleasurable pursuit of His glory. Thanks be to God, I am still fulfilling my Christian duties with greater regularity than I did in Bible college; however, there is one major difference. I now do these things out of a sense of desire as opposed to a sense of duty. Instead of the Christian disciplines being an end in themselves, they are now a means to an all-satisfying end--God. excellent book, in my opinion, for those that have gone through depression or are counseling people through depression. I would not recommend for a personal read for the person currently in depression. It is not very heart-oriented, though very truthful. Therefore I find this one of the worst good books written by Piper. (show less)

This book changed my life. Without a doubt, the most influential book (outside the Bible) that has shaped my Christian thinking and theology. This book changed my life. Without a doubt, the most influential book (outside the Bible) that has shaped my Christian thinking and theology. This book is so great because it hammers the point that the point of the Christian walk is the relationship with Jesus Christ. All our worth is to be found in the redemptive work of Christ and our treasure must be the Lord Jesus Christ himself. I remember quite vividly after reading halfway through this book, getting on my knees and praying to God that he would be my joy, and immediately my heart was set on fire, I was quiet an amazing experience. After that prayer my life as a Christian was radically changed, and through that change, I yearned for a deeper relationship with Christ and I began to jump into theology and really setting my eyes and motives upon Christ. I owe it all to this book, fantastic, I can't say enough about it. I read this book two years ago and it is still the first book that I recommend to any Christian. I love it. Thank you John Piper. Amen! (show less)

As a companion to desiring God, this book provides the practical answer to the question - well, if I'm supposed to find so much joy in God, why is that the battle is so hard, and my worship so mediocre much of the time? Piper invites us compellingly to fight for true joys that are solid, lasting and ultimately satisfying in God. Practical and useful in the Christian battle to "rejoice in the Lord always". Includes a very helpful chapter on "wielding the world in the fight for j... (show more)
