Feminism isn't dead. It just isn't very cool anymore. Enter Full Frontal Feminism, a book that embodies the forward-looking messages that author Jessica Valenti propagates on her popular website, Feministing.com.

Covering a range of topics, including pop culture, health, reproductive rights, violence, education, relationships, and more, Valenti provides young women a primer on why feminism matters.

Valenti knows better than anyone that young women need a smart-ass book that deals with real-life issues in a style they can relate to. No rehashing the same old issues. No belaboring where today's young women have gone wrong. Feminism should be something young women feel comfortable with, something they can own. Full Frontal Feminism is sending out the message to readers — yeah, you're feminists, and that's actually pretty frigging cool. (show less)

I too found Valenti's overly-casual style annoying at times, but her attempt to connect with younger women in doing so is understandable. Although I consider myself well-versed regarding feminist issues, I found Valenti's work inspiring as well as rage-inducing. Seriously, women still make up only 15 percent of the seats in Congress, the

Although I consider myself well-versed regarding feminist issues, I found Valenti's work inspiring as well as rage-inducing. Seriously, women still make up only 15 percent of the seats in Congress, the
Senate, and the House of Reps! White women make 76 cents for every dollar a man makes for the same work, and women of color make significantly less. Women are 40 percent more likely to live in poverty than men, and women are STILL doing the bulk of the second shift work: cooking, cleaning, and child rearing. All this while being held to impossible-to-achieve beauty standards while our reproductive rights are controlled by (mostly male, see above) politicians; for example the legislation which allows pharmacists to make our access to Plan B their own personal ethical decision (despite the fact that we, as females, will--statistically speaking--end up undertaking most of the child-rearing work). It's total bullshit. I would consider this book required reading for teenagers of all genders, as well as anyone whose idea of feminism is grounded in cultural myth as opposed to actual research. If you're not outraged, you haven't read this book. (show less)

This book definitely did not live up to my expectations. And as the founder of the amazing blog Feministing.com, Valenti clearly knows her stuff. I did enjoy the brief history section, although it was incredibly short.
But her writing style is just awful. She's so worried about being to "academic" that she doesn't sound intelligent. I felt like she was constantly dumbing things down for a younger audience to understand. Her use of conversational or "informal" style as she... (show more)

But her writing style is just awful. She's so worried about being to "academic" that she doesn't sound intelligent. I felt like she was constantly dumbing things down for a younger audience to understand. Her use of conversational or "informal" style as she calls it, makes it sound like everything is just her opinion. Every time she makes a good point, she follows it up with "Just sayin'." And there's a swear word every other word!
Her absolute major points are certainly true, and she often finds really good quotes and examples to back things up. But anything written in her own words is just excruciating to read. If you're looking for a good feminist read, simple pick this book up and choose something from her index in the back. (show less)
