I enjoyed this Scarpetta book. I don't think it was my favorite of all time, but I really did enjoy taking a weekend to read this one.
Body of Evidence: A Scarpetta Novel (Kay Scarpetta Mysteries)
#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell returns to the chilling world of gutsy medical examiner Kay Scarpetta in this suspense fiction classic.
Reclusive author Beryl Madison finds no safe haven from months of menacing phone calls -- or the tormented feeling that her every move is being watched. When the writer is found slain in her own home, Kay Scarpetta pieces together the intricate forensic evidence -- while unwittingly edging closer to a killer waiting in the shadows....

While the writing in Cornwell's second Scarpetta story was quite a bit better than her first one, the story itself was tepid and lacking. And while she managed to reign in her desire to show off about how much she knows, Cornwell still had to throw in little tid-bits of arcana (such as what Scarpetta uses to clean her gun) that add nothing to the story. This book was too much about chasing false leads and Kay's tangled relationship with an old love. And why, after two brutal murders, two suicides, and two terrorizations of Scarpetta in her own home, does it take the death of a squirrel to galvanize Kay into finally taking action? The revelation of who the real killer was and how he got into the victim's house (and Kay's, at the end) was telegraphed about 150 pages before the end. When you see the end coming that far in advance, finishing the book becomes more an excersising of the eyes than a pleasure. There was just not enough meat on this bone to satisfy my appetite for a good mystery. (show less)

Easy to read but not particularly well written - with far too much medical explanations that don't make a difference (I don't care how they do something, just that it's doable). Disappointing ending as there was a lot of build up then suddenly it climaxed so fast it only took a page or two with no decent lead in to. Also, as a murder investigation book - I was told who it was about half way through, they just couldn't find him and didn't know how he managed to foil the murdered. An ok read... (show more)

From the name I was expecting a lot, especially when The Times calls the book 'Head-under-bedclothes tension'. I was quite disappointed. Am I just too clever because, up to a point, I saw most of the plot coming and thus the tension turned to page stalling boredom. The chapters where extremely long too and the narrative wordy, so I didn't feel I ever really got into it. I read when I go to bed, like I expect most people do, therefore you need a cut off point before you fall asleep and totally... (show more)

The chapters where extremely long too and the narrative wordy, so I didn't feel I ever really got into it. I read when I go to bed, like I expect most people do, therefore you need a cut off point before you fall asleep and totally lose the thread. With chapters in excess of 30 pages I found this was not always possible and ended up lost and re-reading.
There where some nice little twists in places, but overall not really me and I don't agree with The Times review. (show less)Already read
