The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life
John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.
Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."
And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.
Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

I borrowed this book from the library and expected to like it, because it was billed as a "funny" and "heartwarming." I really didn't care for it at all. Yes, it was well-written and the author deserves credit for good writing. But it was over-the-top obvious in its attempts to manipulate the reader's emotions. In other words, it the book was, in my opinion, working way to hard at being heartwarming, and to me, that was a turnoff. It was like one of those four-hanky movies everyone cries over and then forgets a month after it leaves the theatres...oh wait, they did make Marley and Me into a movie like that, didn't they? Normally I don't read a book that a movie is based on unless its a book I read a long time ago (i.e. the Lord of the Rings Triology) or if perhaps I read another book by the same author. The latter was the case in Marley and Me...and I am glad I did.

The book was a really good read, chronicling the life of Marley, a Labrador Retriever who won the hearts of John and Jenny...this book touched me as I've had a number of dogs in my life over the years and I could see my other dogs in Marley in the antics as well as the intimate times he shared with his "forever family".
It was very refreshing to read a feel-good story....one that made me laugh and cry...and this is a book I would recommend for dog lovers near and far, especially for families who are looking to adopt an animal who gives unconditional love.... (show less)

All in all a good book. If anything I would have liked more personal detail about how the rest of the Grogans' lives absorbed the dog. Grogan presents what seems like a bizarre schedule of coming home every few hours to feed or supervise the dog, over a period of over a decade, without a lot of self-awareness that this is not how most pet owners choose to live even if it is possible for them. Grogan presents what seems like a bizarre schedule of coming home every few hours to feed or supervise the dog, over a period of over a decade, without a lot of self-awareness that this is not how most pet owners choose to live even if it is possible for them. I enjoyed the serious discussion Grogan engages in on two topics: 1) When are pets’ behavior problems too much? and 2) When is it time to put a suffering pet down? In my own family we were tone deaf on both these points, tolerating far too much pet misbehavior and giving very sick pets “natural deaths” that in retrospect were not the best choice. Grogan’s columnist style is either a plus or a minus; I found him a bit ADHD but appreciated the short chapters that seemed to result from this. (show less)

I laughed outload so many times while I read this book and had to find a time to finish the last 30 pages because I knew I'd be crying at the end...

The book is much, much better than the movie. I laughed so hard and cried some too. I love Grogan's style of writing; it was very pleasant to read.

I have to say, this is one of the best books I have read. It's funny, it's sad, it's everything you want in a book!!

it's a very, very touching story of how a pet and his human partner found each other and stayed with each other until the end.

Marley and Me
A newspaper centre spread which highlighted this books publication prompted me to read it. Not my typical read, it was a rollercoaster trip through the thirteen years of a unique dog's life, a dearly loved k9 named Marley.
John Grogan writes so transparently, you experience all his happiness and frustrations, sharing his life with Marley. When the little bundle of fluff first entered his life, to the heart rending farewell, it is a wonderful account of a man and his best friend.
Marley was a key part of John's life, sharing his marriage, family and the joys and heartache of life's ups and downs.
A wonderful emotive read. Highly recommended and very rewarding.
Thank you John for publishing such a wonderful journey, a journey of the life of your dear friend Marley.

Which do you think is better - the book or the movie?
Marley & Me is a pretty incredible movie... and book! I would almost always say book versions are better than movies, but this time, I'm torn.
Which do you think was better?
