In his second collection of stories, as in his first, Carver's characters are peripheral people--people without education, insight or prospects, people too unimaginative to even give up. Carver celebrates these men and women.

I read this at the suggestion of a respected writer friend after I admitted I was a long-time John Cheever fan. He shared with me that Raymond Carver admittedly adored John Cheever and that I might enjoy reading this book. It was his favorite so I thought I would be jumping in at a good point. I did find it to be similarly spare and lonely like Cheevers "Short Stories", also spartan and with economical writing which gets you there with an impression rather than every detail. It's a fascination of mine; the lonely, NYC bedsitter people and worlds they live in. Like a good Edward Hopper painting. Starkly lit,and empty. The thing that was very similar for me was the surprises sprinkled throughout the stories that you don't expect and are somewhat shocking! I haven't returned to this author yet, but may soon. I find this book to be up there with reading the classics and a great example of quality writing style and character development. (show less)

(show less)

  • I was introduced to Carver four years ago in my senior year of college in a fiction writing class. We read the title story from this collection as well as "A Small, Good Thing" and "Cathedral," neither of which are included in this book. Perhaps "The Bath," but I think I liked that one because it reminded me of "A Small, Good Thing.&qu... (show more)

In the end, although I still love Carver's writing, I think the book Where I'm Calling From is a much better representation of his style. (show less)
