Beloved
Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single wor... (show more)

Filled with bitter poetry and suspense as taut as a rope, Beloved is a towering achievement. (show less)

I never thought this would be my very first book review but after reading several of the reviews posted by others, I felt compelled to voice my opinion. I am genuinely surprised and puzzled to learn that the majority of its readers are positively and strongly affected by this "so-called-masterpiece", when I only find myself so utterly and disturbingly confused with the way it is written.
As much as I try to like this book and see the greatness in it as so many others have, I am failing at it terribly. I still have another 100 pages to read, but I am not sure if I will have changed my opinion of this book by the time I finish. I am sorry, but I just do not get this book. If you want to challenge yourself, maybe this is the right book for you! I must say I am not too impressed and my favorite books of all times remain "The Good Earth" and "Jane Eyre."
PS After having finished the book, I still stand by the review I had posted a month ago. Although the book got a little better toward the end, it did not improve so much as to change my opinion of it. (show less)

"Would it be alright?
Would it be alright to go ahead and feel?
Go ahead and count on something?" - p46.Beloved / Toni Morrison
How many of us actually read a book through close reading? Meaning - swallowing whole every single word of the text, not skipping or ignoring any dot, comma, question mark and letter? Toni Morrison's writing engulfs me. I find myself not wanting to miss anything because the combination of her words creates magic.

I've read Morrison's Jazz, Song of Solomon and now - Beloved. Yet I can't really remember the plots, only an image of a girl or boy walking down a path, the smell
of air or heat temperature the text enforces on me. Sweat or tears too. But not really
the complete picture or content. Is this how it's supposed to be? Not remember
really what the book was about but in what position did you lye in bed when reading
it, or what taste did you have in your mouth or the crusts in your eyes or the amount
of patience you had for the next page? I don't know. I do know I loved Beloved. The book, not the character :)my book blog:

This was a powerful book that took me to places I didn't really want to go. The language was beautiful, and the cadence really took you into the minds of the characters.
This book does a good job making the atrocity of slavery really hit home to the modern reader, helping us understand how dehumanizing the institution really could be. It takes you beyond the hard work and the physical abuse to the understanding of the toll the mental abuse must eventually take on anyone.

This was not what anyone would describe as a "fun read", but if you are looking to be emotionally moved by a book, this fits the bill perfectly. (show less)
