Using her own life as an example, Elisabeth Elliot guides singles of both genders and of any age on how to put their love lives under the authority of Jesus Christ. Passion and Purity covers dating issues such as: •how to know which person is the right one to marry •loving passionately while remaining sexually pure •the man's and woman's role in relationships •putting God's desires ahead of personal desires •how far is too far, physically This best-selling book now has a new cover, an updated interior design, and a foreword from popular author Joshua Harris. Quest for Love will be redesigned in a similar manner to help readers identify the books as a pair. While Passion and Purity shares the love story of Elisabeth and Jim, Quest for Love is a compilation of stories on how other men and women discovered love through God's direction. Together, these two remarkable books accentuate our need to commit daily to Christ all matters of the heart and to wait on his timing. (show less)

First of all, Elisabeth and Jim Elliot both command a great deal of respect for the Kingdom work they have done. That being said, this book was a disappointment. I read this book because Joshua Harris talks about being influenced by it extensively in his books. Little did I know that I would actually end up preferring Harris' books to this classic.
Elliot does have a lot of good stuff in here, and given today's climate, there is much to be garnered. I appreciated much of her insight and her sharing from her own story, quoting journal entries and letters. However, on the issue of gender roles, she writes with little nuance or thoughtful engagement. She even takes on a mocking tone more than a few times. Her writing sometimes degenerates into rants, as she paints with broad brush strokes, caricaturizes, and tears down the numerous straw-men she creates. There is a lack of mutuality, and lack of allowance for engagement and discussion.
NOT recommended. Read Harris' I Kissed Dating Goodbye and Boy Meets Girl instead. While I don't completely agree with Harris, he at least is much more thoughtful and responsible. (show less)

Incredible book!!
This is a book intended for singles, and is very useful to both men and women!
If you want to read a book about singlehood/dating/courtship that exalts Christ highly above ALL things, especially singlehood and dating. This story shows the splendor of waiting on God's timing, and the joy in trusting Him. Elizabeth traces her story through how she met Jim Elliot, how he declared his love for her, and how (after waiting on God's timing for years) they finally wed! She is incred... Elizabeth traces her story through how she met Jim Elliot, how he declared his love for her, and how (after waiting on God's timing for years) they finally wed! She is incredibly open and honest through this story and includes many journals/letters which show her struggle. She includes heaps of scripture through her telling of this story, making note of what God used to shape and challenge her through these years. This book is hardly a "manual on dating", she doesn't systematically lay out any prescription for the dating process, but with all the scripture she used- she hardly had to :) (show less)Already read

I'd always heard about the book but never really read it all the way through. Wow! I was missing out! I think it's a great example of a relationship that puts Christ above all-even if it means having to wait. A great example of what love really is. Love is more than just a feeling, it's about self-sacrificing because you care more about the well-being of the other person above your own. It's a love that is the same as Christ's love for His church.

I enjoy and appreciate the fact that it's open and honest and is more than just about sitting at home waiting for Prince Charming to knock on your door-their story shows how one can ACTIVELY wait on the Lord and be completely dependent on Him. This book is a real encouragement to those of us who are also waiting on God. (show less)Already read
