Animal Dreams
"Animals dream about the things they do in the day time just like people do. If you want sweet dreams, you've got to live a sweet life." So says Loyd Peregrina, a handsome Apache trainman and latter-day philosopher. But when Codi Noline returns to her hometown, Loyd's advice is painfully out of her reach. Dreamless and at the end of her rope, Codi comes back to Grace, Arizona to confront her past and face her ailing, distant father. What the finds is a town threatened by a silent environmen... Dreamless and at the end of her rope, Codi comes back to Grace, Arizona to confront her past and face her ailing, distant father. What the finds is a town threatened by a silent environmental catastrophe, some startling clues to her own identity, and a man whose view of the world could change the course of her life. Blending flashbacks, dreams, and Native American legends, Animal Dreams is a suspenseful love story and a moving exploration of life's largest commitments. With this work, the acclaimed author of The Bean Trees and Homeland and Other Stories sustains her familiar voice while giving readers her most remarkable book yet.

It's a hit!
No, it's a flop!
I like like Barbara Kingsolver but after reading most of her books am finding her themes to be a bit redundant.

Over the past few years I've enjoyed many of Barbara Kingsolver's books. Someday I'll get around to reading the Poisonwood Bible that gets such great reviews.
Animal Dreams was an equally simple and and complex story of a woman who feels she can't go home. She returns to the small town she grew up in to help take care of her father. Growing up she never felt accepted by the community. This time around things are different, but she doesn't necessarily see it that way. Reading this book was a g... This book reminded me exactly why I don't read books anymore! I was reading it as I walked to the metro, I stayed up way too late to finish it and then cried myself to sleep at the end. Barbara Kingsolver is an excellent writer. Although her characterizations from book to book can be a bit redundant, she puts experiences/thoughts I have had perfectly and succinctly into one statement that makes me go "exactly!" And although the story can drag a bit at times, I nearly always fin... (show more)

Barbara Kingsolver is an excellent writer. And although the story can drag a bit at times, I nearly always finish the book caring deeply about each character. And although I haven't visited the places she writes about, she helps me feel like I have. That is good writing. (show less)

a great novel
I have loved this book for years and read it about 15 times. I think in some ways it got me through my adolescence ... but I am not sure why.
