In this powerful, epic biography, David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution; who rose to become the second president of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; who was learned beyond all but a few and regarded by some as "out of his senses"; and whose marriage to the wise and valiant Ab... In this powerful, epic biography, David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution; who rose to become the second president of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; who was learned beyond all but a few and regarded by some as "out of his senses"; and whose marriage to the wise and valiant Abigail Adams is one of the moving love stories in American history.

This is history on a grand scale -- a book about politics and war and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, John Adams is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived. (show less)

I never knew there was so much to know about our second President. Stubborn, prideful, temperamental? Yes, but also very brilliant and put those faults to good use in founding our country. Did you know it was he who recommended Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence? Did you know it was he who pushed strongly for our independence against great opposition? I never knew there was so much to know about our second President. Stubborn, prideful, temperamental? Yes, but also very brilliant and put those faults to good use in founding our country. Did you know it was he who recommended Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence? Did you know it was he who pushed strongly for our independence against great opposition? Did you know he defended the "red coats" who were involved in the "Boston Massacre" and was able to prove them innocent? He took a lot of grief for that, but only after long thought, the council of his wife, and his strong belief in justice did her agree to do this.

These are just a few things you will learn in this book. If you watched the HBO special, you only got a taste of how much this man gave to our country. I listened to the audio book, because I would never be able to get through the book. It was 36 cds, but well worth the listen. Very, very good book. (show less)

Yes, this is the book that they made the series about. This book is incredible and gave me an appreciation for America's historical figures that I never had before. Mccullough writes about John and Abigail as though he knew them but also includes a great deal of information about Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton and Madison as well.

Washington, Franklin and Jefferson get all the glory, but this compelling biography details the indispensable contribution Adams loaned to American independence and the formation of our way of government. A dry, tedious history this is not. On to the next David Mc bio for me! It's so refreshing to be entertained WHILE being enlightened, and this read does just that!

A fan of reading the book before watching the movie

This does not always hold true for me but I like to specifically for history. I watched something about a scandal of a Marie Antoinette necklace and that spurred me on to reading 3-4 books about her last summer. This summer I am going to stick with presidents . I can not beleive all that Adams did for our Country and the sacrifices he made for it.I am really disappointed that I did not know more about him. My favorite period in history is the revoluntionary times . I have the Geo.Washington book , but I am not as excited about reading it as I am about as Truman and some of DM other books. I will probably have to buy HBO series or watch it, for I am not a big TV watcher ,don't have HBO and my life is very busy with teenagers and theit activities during the week.
