Nylund's two works, First Strike and The Fall of Reach were superb. Although they may not be exactly up to snuff with the rest of the now-known canon, they are still excellent background stories regarding the fall of the secondary homeworld, Reach, and the training of the SPARTAN-IIs. The Flood, however, was not as great of a novel. It lacked any depth or detail associated with the game it was based on, and only loosely followed the storyline. The Flood, however, was not as great of a novel. It lacked any depth or detail associated with the game it was based on, and only loosely followed the storyline. It seemed to me that Dietz, the author, took his creative license too far with this book, straying from much of the canon. Although the way in which Dietz retells the story is mildly interesting, the book could have been much more interesting had he stuck to the original storyline of the game and illustrated for us, with words, what we were seeing on the screen. I think that The Flood has potential, but should not have been done in the way it was. I cannot, however, let The Flood drag down Nylund's excellent work. (show less)

And despite what people have said about book 2, I say go ahead and read it because it adds a 3rd dimension to the story of the game, not entirely necessary, but the books, from where they are going now (up to the Cole Protocol) have deviated from the game's story slightly. Well, it deviated to begin with as there are more than just 1 spartan left alive kicking Covenant butt. I don't care for the Halo games at all, and kinda wish Halo was just a book series. The game does the story no justice at all . But the games are fun, I will hand them that, specially the multiplayer :P (show less)
