With The Wheel of Time series, Robert Jordan has vaulted himself to the top of the pile when it comes to fantasy writing, he is the one all other authors are compared to. And with good reason. Robert has a knack for detail, for character development and for intricate plotting. These books are rich with characters and sub-plots that intertwine consistently, heros, villains and those in between. And creating another land was not enough for Robert, so he created another world with several cultures and countries and kingdoms. Now put this writing skill together with prophecy, magic, magical creatures, demons and a "finale Battle" prophesized between our hero and ultimate evil. There is a perfect balance in these books between the action, the intrigue, the relationships and plot development that keeps the readers interest. Robert is also very skilled at managing scenes with two or three people and turning around to scenes of thousands without losing his meticulous attention to detail, bringing his vision to the reader with vibrant clarity. Unfortunately, Robert Jordan passed away before finishing his story. After eleven books, the "Short" one at about 750 pages, he didn't get to relate the last of his vision. He did, however, see the end coming and took precautions; detailing the plot to the end, making many notes detailing each plot line (and there are many, many, many) and telling the rest of the story to friends and family. His wife (also his editor) has taken all of the information on the ending of this epic saga and organized it into a full outline. She then selected Brandon Sanderson to write the final book. But as work continued it became apparent that it would not fit in one book, so they have decided to release three more books, the next on November 3, 2009, all of which will of course be edited by Jordan's wife as were all the previous works. As of today (July 7, 2009) I anxiously await the next installment. (show less)

This book, I feel, is the pivotal point of the whole series, primarily because of the ending. The ending is one of the most powerful moments in the series, and, in my opinion, the moment when the status quo first really changes. From this point onwards we see what is perhaps the most solid institution in the world, the White Tower, rapidly fall apart. Established customs and beliefs change, the whole world changes. From this point onwards we see what is perhaps the most solid institution in the world, the White Tower, rapidly fall apart. Established customs and beliefs change, the whole world changes. The title is one of the best fitting in the series. Rand really is the Lord of Chaos. He changes everything, and he starts with the Aes Sedai. The consequences of them swearing fealty are felt throughout the rest of the series.
And, of course, courtesy of Mr. Taim, we are treated to what is perhaps the most awesome phrase I've ever read in any book: "Kneel and swear to the Lord Dragon, or you will be knelt." Phwoar! Feel the power of the Dragon, bitches! (show less)

Perhaps the best Jordan book of the series! I had to stop near the end of this book (about 120 pages away) when "The Gathering Storm" came into the library. Even with the pause, I couldn't believe (for the second time!) how much action is wrapped up in the end of this book! It's much like Gathering Storm, in that when you think things are wrapping up, another shoe is about to drop!

The ending of this book comes on furiously. Just when it seems like things are calming down, one of the biggest turn of events, possibly the biggest of the series, changes everything between Rand and all of the Aes Sedai. The final battle in this book is simply amazing! I had to read it multiple times, it was so enjoyable and amazing. (show less)
