Factotum
One of Charles Bukowski's best, this beer-soaked, deliciously degenerate novel follows the wanderings of aspiring writer Henry Chinaski across World War II-era America. Deferred from military service, Chinaski travels from city to city, moving listlessly from one odd job to another, always needing money but never badly enough to keep a job. His day-to-day existence spirals into an endless litany of pathetic whores, sordid rooms, dreary embraces, and drunken brawls, as he makes his bitter, ... (show more)

Charles Bukowski's posthumous legend continues to grow. Factotum is a masterfully vivid evocation of slow-paced, low-life urbanity and alcoholism, and an excellent introduction to the fictional world of Charles Bukowski.

It's a hit!
No, it's a flop!
I thought I would love Bukowski.
I love dirty bars. I love derelicts. I love watching "Intervention" - so Bukowski should be my man.
Nope.

I was wrong. I was so wrong that I couldn't stop reading it. It was like a train wreck. I really wanted to stuff this book back on the shelf, but I just couldn't. But even though I kept reading it, I really never enjoyed it. I just felt tired and used after every chapter. Ugh. (show less)

“After breakfast and after my parents had left for their jobs I took off my clothes and went back to bed. I masturbated an then made a time study in an old school notebook the time study with some pleasantly obscene drawings, I knew that my father would charge me atrocious prices for room but the desire to find job did not seem to be with me…” -Henry Chinanski - (show less)

This was my intro to Bukowski, and I'm not sure what I expected from him but it wasn't quite this. Not bad at all, but often gross-out disturbing, very past edgy for a book written in the 70s set in the 40s. It feels like Kerouac minus the jazz and pot with a heckuva lot more booze and explicit sex. It's like noir without crime, character driven work without pretension and completely devoid of message or moral. My favorite line in the book was: “It was true that I didn’t have much ambition, b... My favorite line in the book was: “It was true that I didn’t have much ambition, but there ought to be a place for people without ambition, I mean a better place than the one usually reserved. How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?” (p.127) (show less)
