The follow-up to "Something Borrowed" was not as enjoyable as the former for me, but with Giffin's writing style, is still such a good read. The follow-up to "Something Borrowed" was not as enjoyable as the former for me, but with Giffin's writing style, is still such a good read. Darcy was just dumped by her fiancee, whom she learned cheated on her with her best friend, Rachel. Nevermind she became pregnant by Dex's best friend Marcus. For the first time in her life, she sees the people around her have moved on and their lives are not all about her anymore. She needs to get away from everyone, so she moves to London with her friend, Ethan, and again tries to recreate her Manhattan lifestyle, despite a baby on the way. She finally gets her ass handed to her by Ethan, who lays it on the line: she is a selfish bitch, has no real understanding of friendship, and save a few redeeming qualities, are a worthless human being. (Paraphrasing, of course.) The rest of the story is her transformation from being the bitch to being a warmer, more compassionate being, and what it truly means to love and be loved as a flawed individual.
I did not relate to Darcy the way I related to Rachel, and that may have been why this book was not as much fun for me. Darcy is such an annoying person. She is so deeply insecure that she compares herself to everyone and everything, looking for some way to be better than them. Her constant need to be redeemed makes me want to smack the shit out of her. When she has her ego blown away by Ethan, I had issues with her transformation - it came too easily and didn't convince me that someone could change 30 years of egocentric behavior that well. something like that takes years, not weeks or months.
Nonetheless, this is a good read, and Emily Giffin has become one of my favorite chick writers. It is worth checking out, even if you are not into egomaniacal heroines. (show less)

(I'm putting a spoiler warning here, even though everything I'm exposing is pretty much said in the description.)
I enjoied reading about a character I found frustratingly self-centred; it was quite different than the characters in the books I usually read.
The part that bothered me was her transformation. I was hoping Giffin would put her own twist on the whole "become a better person" thing, but it was basically the same tired story that's been done a hundred times before.... (show more)

Girl has everything.
Girl loses everything.
Girl runs away from problems.
Girl gets yelled at by friend.
Girl changes overnight.
Girl lives hapilly ever after. The only thing that made Darcy's transformation worth reading was the fact that it was an extention of "Something Borrowed", and you got some (though not much) details as to what happened with Rachel and Dex after the last book ended.
Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoied this book and I do recommend it to those who have read (or will read) Something Borrowed - I'm just saying I was hoping for more. (show less)

I loved Rachel and Dex’s relationship in Something Borrowed; as a reader I hated that their love results in a serious affair but you also understand that Darcy is focused solely on herself and her own wants. And here you learn what was going on with Darcy during the same time frame as Something Borrowed. Darcy loses her fiancé, her lover, her friends (the loss of Rachel particularly grating), and her job. But this book is where she finds herself and her own strength; she has to lose what she ... And here you learn what was going on with Darcy during the same time frame as Something Borrowed. Darcy loses her fiancé, her lover, her friends (the loss of Rachel particularly grating), and her job. But this book is where she finds herself and her own strength; she has to lose what she thought she wanted to find what she needed. Ethan (her childhood love) is a staunch supporter, and forces her to become aware of how her actions affect other people. Giffin’s books are about relationships, and not just the sexual – friends, siblings, parents. The “Something” series is about friendship and lines that are assumed should never be crossed. What surprised me about Rachel and Darcy’s interaction in this book is that Darcy's strength makes Rachel seem bland. It gave me a new perspective on Rachel and Dex’s relationship. It was great to see how everyone evolved, and how life continued on. (show less)

It took a little bit for me to get into this book which is quite the opposite of how I felt about "Something Borrowed". That being said I wound up LOVING the book once Darcy started to really grow as a character. One aspect I really liked: the fact that Emily didn't allow for Darcy and Rachel's friendship to magically rekindle because of circumstance the way so many movies and books so often do. I am a huge fan of forgiveness and moving forward but it truly takes time and it shows that you can be genuinely happy for someone without having to have past hurts completely resolved when maturity is in place. omg! i frigging loved it. it was great. i enjoyed learning the two sides of the story. i instantly connected with Rachael in Something Borrowed and i guess everyone hated Darcy. The relationships between the doc and darcy, the girlfriend and ethan, and the swap was real good. I cried when Darcy called Rach to tell her about the birth and when Rach sent blankets for the boys. then Darcy used teh ribbons to tie her bouquet. that was special. The last 5 chapters including the epilogue pretty much did it for me. Great novel in all. (show less)

I just finished this book and it was great! I literally didn't want to put it down the whole time I was reading it. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed the book. I'm not usually into "chick" books because they can get really annoying after awhile and I feel drained afterwards, but Giffin has a smart and beautiful writing style. She makes the characters feel so real, you feel as though you know them personally. I really liked how the first book was from one friend's point of view,... (show more)

I really liked how the first book was from one friend's point of view, and this book, was from another friend's point of view. When do you ever get to hear two sides of a story in such detail? I was alittle hesitant at first to read the sequel because of the main character Darcy and what a headache she gave me in the first book (that being an understatement), but the book softened towards the end (not too cheesy) and it turned out to be a delight! Giffin is always full of surprises. I really, truly enjoy reading her books. She has become one of my new favorite authors. I can't wait to read her next book :) (show less)

Damn you, Emily Giffin! I did not, and I truly mean DID NOT, want to like the character of Darcy Rhone. Ever. But I had to read the second half of our tale.
And so, after such a heart wrenching novel focusing on the infidelities between Darcy's fiance, Dex and Darcy's best friend, Rachel (whom I absolutely adored), I really wanted to see what could unfold in the next installment. Darcy was soooo easy to hate. She was immature, snide, pompous, arrogant, the list goes on. I was more than halfway through the novel and was so happy that she had not been redeemed.
And in the end, I cried. I did, I admit it. It was beautiful. She was redeemed. Everyone knoes the old Darcy is still lurking, but it's nice to see her make a valiant effort to be a better person.
And I was happy to see the finale of Rachel and Dex's relationship.
And I was happy with the ending of Darcy's story.
Congrats Giffin, another winner. But I'm still angry about liking Darcy! (show less)Already read

So, having read Something Borrowed and fell in love with Rachel and Dex's story, I couldn't wait to read Something Blue to find out what else happens. I was such a supporter of Rachel getting the guy in the end, that I actually found myself disliking Darcy a bit. You can imagine my surprise when I started reading this book that it was all about Darcy!

I'm sure this book was intended to paint Darcy in a better light and show that she wasn't as shallow as Something Borrowed made her out to be, but it was kind of unsuccessful in that endeavor. I still couldn't believe Darcy's mentality about some things and at times I just wanted to reach into the book and strangle her! I also found myself wanting to know more about Dex and Rachel and how their story panned out and was kind of left unsatisfied there. You did get to hear bits and pieces, but not nearly enough for my liking.
Overall, it was another good book from Emily Giffin, but I preferred the first one over this. (show less)

I can't seem to choose which book i like best, Something Borrowed or Blue, for they have their own peculiar trait. The wit, humor, and class of E. Giffin's writing style is present that makes you want to read it over and over.

Yes, in the beginning you would really want to smack Darcy to make her see sense for being so self-absorbed. But then Ethan did that to her. Darcy's transition was a tad fast but before the talk or confrontation with Ethan, she was already contemplating everything that was happening in her life. Wasn't she? Darcy makes us see that life gives us second chances if with are open to them. That everything happens for a reason. We can never choose our destiny especially if our lives are intertwined. Also material and physical things don't make us who we are. Furthermore this story makes the readers realize that true Love and friendship are truly priceless. (show less)Already read

I'll be honest- i did not want to read this. After Something Borrowed i had no desire to read Darcy's side of the story. I found that Darcy's transformation made her into a much more likable person. She actually began to care about her pregnancy, attempted to make friends, and stopped worrying about herself, shopping, and her looks. I did feel her change was forced at first, but i believe that she was a better person by the end of the novel. Giffin, again, manages to create a wonderful character out of Darcy, someone who is deeply insecure and selfish, and who becomes pregnant with her best friends ex. Again, even as she was a horrible person, who did pretty despicable things, i found myself rooting for her and Ethan, and rooting for her pregnancy to go through okay. I even found myself liking this as much, if not more than the first book. So if you didn't like Darcy, you might just be in for a surprise. (show less)
