“In the process of writing this book I discovered there were clear, broad, even universal themes that ran through my life, a coherent arc to my journey that, if I could be truthful in the telling, might provide a road map for other women as they face the challenges of relationships, self-image, and forgiveness. What I did not anticipate was how my journey would also resonate with men.”

What I did not anticipate was how my journey would also resonate with men.”

America knows Jane Fonda as actress and activist, feminist and wife, workout guru and role model. In this extraordinary memoir, Fonda shows that she is much more. From her youth among Hollywood’s elite to her film career and her activism today, Fonda reveals intimate details and personal truths she hopes “can provide a lens through which others can see their lives and how they can live them a little differently.” Surprising, candid, and wonderfully written, My Life So Far is filled with insights into the personal struggles of a woman living a remarkable life. An interesting memoir of one of Hollywood's most notable and sometimes scandolous leading ladies. Often recieving either accolades for her performances and political activities or scorn and retribution, often being mislabeled as a traitor in this country, when often she was merely supporting humanitarian causes. In this revealing book she readily admits to her flaws and lapses of good judgement, explaining the background in what she was trying to achieve, perhaps answering the question: "What WAS she THINKING??!?" The book begins in her childhood, and the relationship she didn't have with her Father, Henry Fonda and her troubled mother. This lack of familial relationships, leads her into several failed marriages, always attempting to mold herself to please the men in her life, with unpleasant results. This story is an interesting journey, albeit what seems like a long one. When you have had a wildly variable life as Jane has, by the time you are nearing seventy, there is an awful lot to tell, and she does it admirably. (show less)

It took a little while for me to get into the fram of mind to read what turned out to be a fabulous book which resonated far more with me that I ever thought possible. Her need to always make things better and her searing honesty. I learnt so much about American politics and the dreadful slur the "Hanoi Jane" incident was: the said photo of her applauding sat on a missle launcher was her acknowledging a choir of children who had come to meet her. Even as recently as the BUSH administration her links to politicians were exploited and used against opposong candidates. The parallels for "little men" to go to war to appease their own insecurities sings through: Iran and Vietnam have such similar circumstances and both presidents (NIXON) knew it was a war they could never win but pride allowed this to be ignored for fear of a "cowardice" card. Jane Fonda moves in these circles with such self assuredness that she was unable to contain in her private life. An excellent and thought provoking read-loved it. (show less)

I found Jane Fondas life story alot more interesting and insightful that I first thought it had been... I was amazed that her mother had killed herself, and her father had lied about it (she found out when she went to school and one of her classmates showed her an article!). I also found the pieces about Vietnam and her activism very interesting as well.. there were so many lessons there. I found Jane Fondas life story alot more interesting and insightful that I first thought it had been... I also found the pieces about Vietnam and her activism very interesting as well.. there were so many lessons there. Found it a bit stange for someone that suffered bulimia and claiming not to be so obsessed about outward appearances becoming an aerobics star and as of late the face for lóreal (because you are worth it!)... So a mixed response to this book but enjoyable for the backstories, the meeting with Katherine Hepburn and the dynamics of the relationship that she had with her father Peter Fonda. And yes despite your political views she IS a fascinating complex person that seems to have moved beyond the idea of being an "Hollywood Icon." (show less)
