Easy choice for me. Lupin was by far the best, and Umbridge the worst.

Lupin was the best teacher, but the fake Moody and Snape were very good at it. But we don't like them, do we? The worst teacher was, of course that Umbridge witch...

Lupin was for sure the best. Umbridge was evil and Lockhart was a joke.

Clearly Lupin was the best actual teacher and everyone's favorite. "Moody" awed and intimidated his students while Snape was so unpleasant and judgmental that his considerable knowledge was squandered in petty nitpicking.

As for the worst... well, Umbridge was an awful woman to be sure but she inspired the students to learn far more than they would have ordinarily by starting the D.A.

I agree, Lockheart made my teeth hurt, and Lupin was excellent in both scope and delivery. We don't like Snape, (agreed) but he is very passionate about the subject. If you were in that class (and Not Harry Potter) you would learn a ton.

For me, the best teacher has to be Lupin, he was really good at it, even thought he was absent a lot. Umbridge was the worst for me too.

Yes!!! Very good point! Lockhart was incompetent, Umbridge at least taught them theory even without practical knowledge it is still useful knowledge. What Lockhart "taught" was completely useless for anybody.

As for my reply, while Lupin was definitely a great teacher, for all that warm and fuzzy teacher/student relationship stuff--I have to agree with a post above, Fake Moody and Snape knew their dark arts since both are in love with the dark arts.

What better way to teach magical defence is when the teacher KNOWS what the enemy is doing, rather than an expert in defence on its own.

Personally all three would make a good teaching team since there are so many perspectives.

Since the books just mentioned these lot of teachers, I wonder if there are other teachers that teach the same subject for different grade levels. I suppose not--otherwise Hermione would had been placed in Honours while Harry and Ron would been in Remedial Potions from the start!

Yes, that does seem odd now you point it out. Hermione would definitely have been in advanced classes. In MY school (Algebra, eg) was open to anyone who qualified, regardless of their age but there was just the one (Algebra) teacher. I don't know how it works in private schools or boarding schools.

Harry & Ron, without Hermione's help would have had to repeat some classes.
She says (Sorcerer's Stone) that they have to pass their subjects to move on to the next year, what if they get a"T"? Maybe there ARE remedial lessons as suggested by Snape in OoP.

Lupin hands down! He is certainly the most influential and likable, plus he's got an angle that makes him complex and not just the "good guy" teacher. As for worst: Umbridge.

Thats a easy Decision... Lupin Obviously. He was one of my favorite characters overall let alone favorite DADA teacher. Plus he was the only one that wasn't Crazy (in some sense of the word) or incompetent.

Lupin was the best. Snape was kind of funny especially when he got the class to turn to a page right at the back of the book trying to expose lupin. Lockhart was a wonderful coward and umbridge was what i would call my worst nightmare. Writing in your own blood. Scary.

Actually, Harry was the best, but since he wasn't technically a teacher I'd say:
      1. Lupin
      2. Mad-Eye
3.Snape (even though everyone hated him, he knew his s**t)
      4. Quirrell
      5. Umbridge
      6. Lockhart
