Fantagraphics was founded in 1976 by Gary Groth and Mike Catron at College Park, Maryland. Kim Thompson joined the company in 1977, and became a co-owner with Groth.

Fantagraphics publishes The Comics Journal, a magazine that covers comics as an art form from a critical perspective. It also has published critically acclaimed and award-winning series and graphic novels such as Ghost World, Hate and Love and Rockets. For many years it was financially dependent on its pornographic Eros imprint.

    Fantagraphics Books, The Alliance Française de Seattle, and 4Culture invite you to launch A Week Celebrating the French Graphic Novel with an Opening Reception at Seattle's Alliance Française this Wednesday, August 13 at 7:00 PM. This reception takes place in the large salon of the historic Good Shepherd Center, located at 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N. (corner of Sunnyside & 50th) in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood. Fantagraphics Books co-publisher and international comics expert KIM THOMPSON will kick off proceedings with a media presentation focusing on 20 men and women who, in just a generation, have taken the French comics from a children's medium to the Oscars.     Among the many highlights is an exhibition by renowned French cartoonist DAVID B. at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery opening this Friday, August 15 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. David will be present to sign books and be very French. The show, "My Story, My Stories," represents an amazing collection of meticulously rendered original comics pages, including pieces from his singular memoir Epileptic, as well as work from his Babel periodical, and contributions to Fantagraphics Books' acclaimed MOME anthology.
