Positions:
  1. The average meal travels 1,300 miles to your plate
  2. Low-income families have little access to fresh, organic and wholesome produce
  3. Less than 10% of the food we eat in Denver, is grown locally
  4. Gardening builds community by bringing people together to grow their own food

Description:
Re:farm Denver seeks to increase local food production by helping low-income families convert their household yards into gardens which are prepared, planted, cared-for, and harvested by them and their neighbors using a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model.

Here in Denver, much like every US city, food is distributed through huge grocery stores and comes from across the globe. Although this means that we can enjoy out-of-season fruits and vegetables year-round, it also means that this food is heavily endowed with chemicals for preservation. Not only is this chemical-laden produce not healthy, low-income families often times do not even have access to this, let alone access to fresher, organic produce.

But through a CSA model, food is distributed directly from the farm or garden to individuals and families. Individuals or families purchase a 'share' of the garden and then receive food each week from that garden.

Re:farm will adapt a traditional CSA model to meet the needs and limited budgets of low-income families by allowing them to exchange a small number of volunteer hours instead of paying for their share. In doing so, Re:farm will not only build community among low-income families, but will also educate them on the benefits of locally grown, organic food, and how to cook and prepare what they grow.

How big is this cause?
