FACE AIDS was founded in 2005 by three students who traveled to Zambia to work in refugee camps and returned profoundly impacted by the scope of the AIDS pandemic and its impact on communities.
Today, FACE AIDS has raised over $1.7 million to fund comprehensive health care in sub-Saharan Africa through a partnership with Dr. Paul Farmer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_ Farmer) and Partners In Health. FACE AIDS is committed to a three-pronged approach to overcoming the AIDS pandemic: 1.) Providing health care through student leadership: FACE AIDS has recruited chapters on over 200 high school and college campuses. Through student fundraising and private matching donations, young leaders from around the world have raised over $1.7 million for comprehensive health care in Africa through FACE AIDS. 2.) Bringing economic empowerment and capacity to the HIV-affected: FACE AIDS sponsors capacity-building and microfinance programs for individuals most affected by HIV/AIDS in rural eastern Rwanda. FACE AIDS also provides opportunities to vulnerable Rwandan youth, including tuition and school fees assistance, support conferences, and student-led educational programs. 3.) Engaging a generation of future leaders in global health: Through a new project, the Global Health Corps (http://www.ghc.org), FACE AIDS sends outstanding young people from around the world on year-long fellowships to work on high-impact projects with inspirational and effective organizations delivering health care services to those in need.
