About this Petition:

Michael Phelps, the winner of 14 Olympic gold medals, was recently photographed smoking marijuana.

Because of our nation's hysterical reaction to responsible, adult marijuana use, Phelps stands to lose his sponsorships, as well as his place in the next Olympics.

Sign this petition if you think Michael Phelps's marijuana use has nothing to do with his ability to compete in the Olympics!

The Desired Outcome of this Petition:

We want Michael Phelps's career to remain unhindered because of his marijuana use, and this incident should only serve to incite discussion about the need to reform our marijuana laws.

We petition that…

Yes, Michael Phelps smoked marijuana.

So have millions of Americans. Many of them have used the drug responsibly and have gone on to lead highly successful lives. One of them became our first African-American president. And another swam his way to 14 Olympic Gold Medals.

Instead of scolding Phelps, we should be asking how he managed to succeed despite his marijuana use. Perhaps the answer has something to do with the fact that the drug isn't nearly as harmful as our government claims it to be.

A CNN/Time poll found that 76 percent of Americans think that marijuana users shouldn't be sent to jail. If a majority of Americans know that Michael Phelps is not a criminal, then why is he being treated like one?

Michael Phelps should not be banned from participating in the next Olympics simply because he used a relatively safe, non-performance enhancing drug during his free time.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
