Our nation faces a critical challenge as we welcome our troops back from war. After bravely risking their lives for our country, these heroes and their families often return to strained relationships, depression and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our response as a grateful nation is critical, and there is a near epidemic of suicides among our Armed Forces. When the signatures of this petition are delivered to the White House, it is hoped that we will have gathered enough voices to speak as one; letting the administration know that it is time to put an end to the policy of not writing condolence letters when military service members commit suicide.

I support Mental Health America’s position that nothing diminishes the personal sacrifices each military family endures on our country’s behalf.
Therefore, I call on you to eliminate the stigma and shame associated with suicide by reversing current policy and forwarding Presidential condolence messages to families of individuals who complete suicide while in military service.
