Committee to Protect Journalists wrote and will deliver this petition.

About this Petition:

Mr. Bahari has been detained in Iran since June 21. No charges have been brought against him by the Iranian authorities, and he has not been granted access to a lawyer. As one of the most impartial and committed journalists in his field, he has reported regularly over the past decade from the Middle East, principally from Iran and Iraq, and provided consistently balanced and insightful reports. As an award-winning documentary filmmaker, he has earned global respect for his work.

The Desired Outcome of this Petition:

That Maziar Bahari be immediately released from custody in Tehran and be allowed to resume his work.

To: His Excellency Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi

We petition that…

We are writing to draw your attention respectfully to the plight of Maziar Bahari, a documentary film maker, journalist, playwright, and Newsweek reporter. Maziar Bahari is an Iranian national as well as a Canadian citizen. He has been detained without charge in Tehran since June 21st, and has not been allowed to see a lawyer or a member of his family, the most basic right under Iranian law.

In recent days nearly 300 top journalists, novelists, playwrights, and filmmakers from over 60 countries have signed petitions supporting Maziar and his work, which has always been fair, objective and reasonable. It does not pose a threat to Iran's national security in any way.

We request that he be immediately released from custody and be allowed to resume his work. As a journalist, he was engaged in fulfilling his professional duties, reporting on critical events following the elections.

Please intercede in his favor and help secure his safe and speedy return to his family and friends.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
