Every year, more than 25,000 men are lured into slavery with the promise of decent pay and the promise of a better life. They believe they have signed up for honest work for a honest day's pay, but what they find is deplorable living conditions, no running water, little to no food, and enormous costs for basic needs like soap. Miles from home men are forced to do backbreaking work, while facing the intimidating presence of armed guards. With no way out, they toil in the hope of buying back their freedom.

Current Situation
To date, over 32,000 workers have been released from slavery in rural Brazil. However, no landowner has ever been imprisoned for this crime, and slavery continues. We are now pushing for a Brazilian Constitutional Amendment that would allow land to be confiscated - without compensation - from those practicing slavery. (show less)
