To: Congress

We petition that…

Please support legislation eliminating the crack/cocaine sentencing disparity. Although powder cocaine and crack cocaine are different forms of the same drug, crack offenses trigger mandatory minimum sentences that are 100 times more severe than those for powder cocaine.

This disparity leads to racist drug sentencing. In 2006, blacks constituted 82% of those sentenced under federal crack cocaine laws, despite the fact that more than 66% of people who use crack cocaine are white.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of reducing the disparity. Their decision followed in the footsteps of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, which partially reduced the disparity last year. Now it is time for Congress to fix the crack/cocaine sentencing disparity.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
