Since 1994, RESTORE: The North Woods has championed the effort to create the largest national park east of the Mississippi River—the proposed Maine Woods National Park & Preserve (MWNP). The MWNP would protect 3.2 million acres of spectacular wilderness in Northern Maine. This region is now under assault from sprawling development and excessive logging. The MWNP would not only restore landscapes to their natural states but also allow for the eventual recovery of species that are now endangered or missing from the Maine Woods. The Maine Woods National Park & Preserve will: 1) restore and protect the heart of the North Woods from an environmental standpoint 2) create thousands of new jobs in a region hit hard by poverty and a dying paper industry 3) ensure public access for recreational opportunities such as: hiking, hunting, fishing, recreational vechicles, camping, boating, and much more. We intend to gather millions of legitimate, verifiable signatures in support of a feasibility study for the proposed Maine Woods National Park & Preserve. While this breathtaking wilderness is located in Northern Maine, it is a land worthy of saving for each and every citizen, regardless of where he or she resides.

By and large, public support in Maine is strong for the creation of the proposed MWNP but it will require broad support from all areas of the United States. Once our signature goal is reached the petition will be presented to members of Congress, who then will be compelled to take the critical first step toward the creation of America's great Maine Woods National Park & Preserve—at the urging of millions of people like you. (show less)
