Hunger crisis in Haiti
Soaring food prices have provoked violent protests, looting and rioting in the already-volatile country of Haiti. The majority of the population survives on less than $2 a day, and now cannot afford even a daily platter of rice, a staple of their diet. The poorest have resorted to eating mud cookies to stave off hunger pains – cakes made of dried yellow dirt, vegetable shortening and salt. Haitians will require assistance and aid with tools, seeds and new technologies to help the nation develop the ability to feed itself.

Cyclone rips through Myanmar
Since the devastating May 3 cyclone, Myanmar’s militant government has been slow to approve international relief efforts. The UN estimates 62,000 to 100,000 dead, with more than a million victims in desperate need of medical assistance, fresh drinking water, shelter and supplies. Countless homes, farms and food stocks have been demolished, and the country faces an increasing risk of an outbreak of infectious diseases with the passing of each day.
