Jana Bouck Remy's Birthday Wish
I'm turning 38 on May 25!
This year I'm donating to a good cause: HandReach
This is why I'm donating my birthday
I don't need any presents...why not use my birthday to do something good for the world?
This is my cause

WHAT IS HANDREACH? HandReach is a global network of compassionate professionals working together to promote humanitarian development in the poorest areas of the world. Our partners around the world come from all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life, but share a common vision of a future where all beings are valued equally, regardless of socioeconomic status or physical ability, and where the awesome potential of youth is cultivated toward solving some of the world's most pressing problems. Education and medical care are absolutely necessary for human civilization. We bring together the people who need help with the people who are able to help. Anyone and everyone is welcome to contribute in any way possible. THE CHILDREN'S HEALING INITIATIVE HandReach is working to provide world-class medical and reconstructive care for children suffering from major trauma injuries, such as severe burns or amputations. We are networking hospitals around the world via telemedicine, training programs, and joint clinics to bring state-of-the-art reconstructive surgery, prosthetics, equipment, physical/occupational therapy, and psychosocial therapy to pediatric trauma survivors at no cost to them or their families. Our goal is to improve the quality of these children's lives and help them realize their potential. THE SICHUAN HOPE PROJECT Many schools and children's lives were devastated by the Sichuan earthquake of May 12, 2008. We are working to reconstruct schools and bring world-class prosthetics and physical therapy to the young survivors so they may live their lives and function independently. "MINDING THE GAP" Millions of children and their families in the Chinese countryside still find education and needed medical care to be out of reach due to poverty. HandReach's mission is to facilitate creative partnerships to help bridge the gaps. Bringing together private and public resources, HandReach is working to help ensure a full education for every child in China. We won't let them be limited by poverty, injury, or disease. We work from the grassroots to develop youth leadership and to connect resources, ideas, and funding where they are needed most. TRANSPARENCY Since its founding in 2002, HandReach's highest priority has been full transparency and maximum value from every donation. We are composed of volunteers so that 100% of targeted donations can be delivered exactly where they are intended without being lost on overhead costs. Photos, receipts, and videos from projects are provided openly to the public on our website so that donors can see how the funds are being utilized. HandReach is serious about bringing people together in ways that really make a difference for every life we touch. This initiative is made possible by compassionate people like you. Any contribution can make a big difference in children's lives.
This is why I care
HandReach aids burn victims in China who need medical care such as wound care, skin grafts, surgeries and prosthetics. Please consider donating to HandReach or your favorite charity. It would be the very best gift you could give for my birthday.
PS: I upped my wish to $600, rather than my previous goal of $380. Let's do this!
PPS: Upped my wish one more time to $1000. This seems HUGE to me, but all of your small donations are making such a difference, I want to keep it going. :)
An important letter from my friend Brecken who volunteers with HandReach:
"Jana, you rock!!! I was offline all day today, only to log in and find a bunch of lovely donations from your friends. Now I feel like it's HandReach's birthday, too! :)
I'd like to designate this money to a special cause. We're going to be providing prostheses this summer for a 12-year-old girl who lost both legs in the Sichuan earthquake last year. We just learned this morning that there was a fire in her temporary camp overnight, and her house and first set of prostheses burned. We're planning to get her a set of even better prostheses, and plenty of excellent rehab. Her name is Huang Meihua (pronounced "Hwahng May-hwa").
Happy, happy, happy birthday, Jana! I can't thank you enough for thinking of HandReach! You are giving the gift that will truly keep on giving...."
I've raised $1,339 of my $1,000 goal...
Birthday Greetings

Because Jana is so young at heart I gave half her age. (haha) That justification is silly, I just wanted to explain the odd number. But this is sure better than the tequila I might have bought you for your bday otherwise. (Don't be surprised if you see some margartia mix on Saturday night.) You are simply the best Jana and I hope you have a special day. -
Hi Jana! Happy belated birthday. Sorry it took a little while to do this. My cc was being wiggy but we got it worked out (apparently buying skype credit for OCFM was enough to make my spending suspicious and get my card frozen... it does not take much, apparently, to get cc cos nervous these days). Anyway, we were happy to be informed of this cause and to donate in your honor. Happy birthday from Guillermo, Sonia, and me.
