As their website (http://www.rankinfoundation.org/) states, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation is "dedicated to raising funds for, and awarding scholarships to, low-income women, ages 35 and older." Most scholarship recipients are from disadvantaged backgrounds and are often survivors of domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, emotional disabilities, and other difficult circumstances. Many have started their collegiate experience at community colleges and are moving on to baccalaureate institutions to complete their bachelor's degrees. Founded in 1976, JRF is named in honor of America's first female member of Congress and one of our most distinguished peace and women's rights activists. More than 600 women have been able to attend college thanks to scholarships from JRF.
This is why I care
As Program Assistant with JRF, I've heard many of our scholars' stories first hand and am constantly amazed at their dedication and persistence. The women JRF serves are truly inspirational! Further, JRF's mission to help low-income women over 35 change their lives through education resonates me as a first generation college student from a low-income family.
