About this Nonprofit

Mission:	When a child or teenager has a serious medical condition, everyone in the family is affected. The kids, their parents and siblings struggle, in different ways, to grapple with the intrusion of illness or serious injury into their lives. Starlight understands what families go through when a child is sick, and how important it is for families to find relief from constant worry and isolation. Our entertainment, education and family activity programs have been proven to distract children from their pain, help them better understand and manage their illnesses, and connect families facing similar challenges so that no one feels alone.
Description:	Starlight Starbright's programs and services help kids address the social, emotional, and medical aspects of living with serious illness. They are designed to restore some of the laughter and happiness that illness takes away from kids and to offer them and their families programs and services that empower them in the face of illness. Children and teenagers served by Starlight Starbright suffer from chronic, serious, or life threatening illnesses and injuries. The population we serve includes children living with diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, heart disease, asthma and kidney disease, as well as those impacted by severe injuries such as traumatic burn or spinal cord injuries. Signature programs such as the Starbright World online computer network are based on established behavioral research findings and are designed to empower children and teenagers to cope with their medical condition. Research studies conducted on select Starlight Starbright programs indicate benefits for children who engage with these programs, including: * Decreased pain and anxiety * Increased knowledge and sense of responsibility for managing disease * Decreased need for pain medication * A greater willingness to return for treatment * A greater sense of peer support * Alleviation of stress, loneliness and isolation that often accompany prolonged illness Starlight Starbright?s programs are available to pediatric patients served by hospitals, clinics, schools, support groups, faith based organizations, community based locations, and healthcare centers that the Foundation partners with worldwide. Each month, Starlight Starbright?s programs touch the lives of more than 180,000 young people and their families.
