About this Nonprofit

Mission: Recycle Ann Arbor (RAA) is a home-grown, private, nonprofit organization, incorporated in 1977 to provide one of the first curbside recycling collection programs in the nation, and even has roots grounded in the Ecology Center of Ann Arbor's efforts to recycle for the first Earth Day in 1970. Since then, RAA has driven forward recycling, reuse and waste reduction efforts in our community with the relentless support of the citizens of Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas. Today, Recycle Ann Arbor provides weekly curbside recycling service to every single-family household and most multi-family households under contract to the City of Ann Arbor. In addition to that, RAA operates several recycling drop-off stations, commercial recycling, a website (www.recycleannarbor.org), a ReUse Center, and the En-House (short for Environmental House) Green Building Demonstration Area.

As a non-profit agent of change, Recycle Ann Arbor's mission is to develop, deliver, promote and support effective services, programs and demonstrations that improve environmental quality through recovery, reuse, recycling and effective energy use. Your financial support will help us fulfill our mission by empowering us to look ahead and experiment with new waste reduction, reuse and recycling programs.

Description: Curbside Collections: Recycle Ann Arbor operates a weekly Curbside Collection program that allows Ann Arbor Residents to place their home recyclables at the curb for collection. Items are separated into two bins, one for paper goods, the other for plastics, glass & ceramics, metals, and milk cartons & juice boxes. The overall waste diversion rate for Ann Arbor has been greater than 50 percent for several years and participation measured at more than 95 percent of households.

Commercial Collections Program: Area businesses and organizations can arrange for weekly, bi-weekly or monthly pick-ups of office paper.

Drop Off Station (DOS): Recycle Ann Arbor operates the DOS for the City of Ann Arbor. The DOS accepts all materials collected at curbside as well as a number of materials that are drop off only. Residents can also purchase compost, mulch, and recycled antifreeze at this location.

ReUse Center: The ReUse Center, located at 2420 S. Industrial Highway, was started by RAA as an alternative to throwing away perfectly good stuff.
The ReUse Center collects used but still useful items and sells them back to the public at bargain prices. The ReUse Center operates in over 20,000 square feet of warehouse floor space.

En House: The En-House Green Building Demonstration Area is a full-scale model of a green building. Built inside the ReUse Center, the En-House is open
to the public as a reference on how to make one's home or office building blend in with it's environment instead of taking away from it. Good indoor and outdoor air quality, energy efficiency, and materials that are either recycled, natural, or come from renewable resources are all built in to the En-House. RAA staff guide tours of the demonstration area for area residents, schools, businesses, and organizations.

Borders Distribution On-Site Processing: Two full time RAA staff members are stationed at the 200,000 square foot Borders book distribution center. The staff collects and recycles 97% of the plants cardboard, wood pallets, styrofoam, separated metal, office paper, and hard & soft covered books on site.
