About this Nonprofit
| Mission: | Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is the voice of the 21st century veteran. Founded in June 2004, IAVA is a nonprofit, non-partisan veterans' education and advocacy organization. The first and largest Iraq and Afghanistan veterans group in America, IAVA has thousands of active member veterans and more than 90,000 grassroots supporters nationwide. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are in their fifth and sixth years respectively. More than 1.6 million American troops have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, and thousands have been deployed multiple times. IAVA addresses critical issues facing new veterans and their families, including mental health, Traumatic Brain Injury, a stretched VA system, inadequate health coverage for national guardsmen and reservists, and outdated GI Bill educational benefits. |
|---|---|
| Education: | IAVA is dedicated to educating the public about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, advocating on behalf of those who have served, and fostering a community for troops, veterans, and their families. IAVA reaches millions of Americans through a variety of mediums. IAVA has become a premier source for the news media reporting on the war and veterans’ concerns. IAVA members have been featured by hundreds of media outlets, including CNN, PBS, Fox, MSNBC, NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post, AP, and Stars and Stripes. |
| Advocacy: | IAVA is the leading source on Iraq and Afghanistan veterans’ issues by testifying before Congress and the Department of Defense, and shaping policy and legislation. IAVA’s legislative efforts have grown substantially with the advancement of our research capabilities and DC office. IAVA’s DC staff regularly attends hearings and briefings, and has strong relationships on Capitol Hill and with other Veterans Service Organizations such as the VFW and the American Legion. Recent legislative successes include dramatic increases in veterans' health care funding, the passage of the Joshua Omvig Suicide Prevention Bill in the House, and the introduction in the House and Senate of the Veterans Education Tuition Support (VETS) Bill, originally drafted by IAVA's Patrick Campbell and sponsored by Senator Brown and Congresswoman Davis. |
| Community: | The IAVA website, www.iava.org , provides new veterans with a variety of essential resources and tools. Veterans can learn their legal rights, find resources on employment and housing, and see a directory of mental health service providers. IAVA is an instrumental outlet for the diverse community of new veterans to connect with one another. Through grassroots efforts and online outreach, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans can contact fellow veterans, share stories, and organize in their local communities. |
