Mission

Founded in 1973 by the mothers of two children who died from brain tumors, we serve individuals globally and award funds for research throughout the United States and Canada. In 2008, we will commemorate our 35th Anniversary Year by awarding $2.5 million for brain tumor research. With continued research for effective therapies and, ultimately, a cure, many more children and adults will win their battles with brain tumors. Over 190,000 individuals are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year in the United States, including 3,000 children. Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer death due to solid tumors in children under the age of 20. Brain tumors do not discriminate - anyone can be affected. People of all ages, races, gender, socio-economic status, urban or rural dweller, students, white or blue collar workers, athletes, CEO''s, celebrities - anyone can be diagnosed with a brain tumor. A brain tumor is uniquely terrifying to the patient and family because it strikes at the very essence of an individual - emotions, intellect, and personality - in addition to the many physical problems it causes.

Description

In addition to funding research, the American Brain Tumor Association offers patient services ranging from a compassionate ear to providing detailed information about specific types of tumors and various treatment options. We receive approximately 600 calls each month from patients and family members requesting information and our award-winning website, which offers access to the vast majority of our publications immediately, receives more than 40,000 unique visitors each month. Three times each year, the ABTA publishes the Messageline, a news magazine that discusses promising research and treatment advances, support for caregivers, and topics of interest to the brain tumor community. Regional meetings (2-3 each year) are held for patients and family members to provide state-of-the-art treatment information, as well as to offer a forum for attendees to network and receive support services. These patient/caregiver-focused meetings are vital for so many who are struggling with the diagnosis of a brain tumor. In addition to listening to experts from across the country, those in attendance have the opportunity to network with each other. Free phone consultations are available with our social workers. They also gather and maintain a wealth of resources, including brain tumor support group listings throughout the country, care options, financial assistance, housing and transportation during treatment, health insurance and social security information. Also, two pen pal programs are available for connecting patients and families with others in similar situations.
