About this Nonprofit
| Mission: | ATA's purpose includes educating the public about responsible and compassionate pet ownership, promoting quality care for dogs and cats at the Town Lake Animal Center, and leading by example in the care of our personal and foster pets. Animal Trustees of Austin was founded by concerned citizens desiring to help lost, abused and abandoned animals in Austin and Travis County. Being a volunteer organization, ATA is made up of members from all walks of life that contribute widely varied skills, but are united by one common interest -- the welfare of the animals. |

| Description: |
ATA's Adoption/Rescue Program gives "unadoptable" animals from Town Lake Animal Center a second chance. In some cases, all these pets need is a little extra time to find the ideal home. ATA provides the best in medical care for "special needs" animals, such as heartworm-positive dogs or animals with broken bones. ATA does not return any animals to the center or euthanize them if they are not adopted -- they stay with us as long as they need to find good families (which sometimes takes years). We have rescued over 2,000 dogs and cats. Providing foster homes for needy animals is only part of the solution to the homeless pet crisis. The cornerstone of any healthy companion animal community must include population control. ATA addressed this problem by establishing a Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic in March of 1997. Using the finest surgical equipment and anesthetics, staffed by an experienced veterinarian and qualified veterinary technicians, and aided by volunteers, our clinic offers affordable, quality pet sterilizations. The clinic also offers testing and parasite prevention. The primary goal of the Spay/Neuter Clinic is to affect the pet overpopulation problem enough to put itself "out of business". ATA also operates a low-cost vaccination clinic. |
