About this Nonprofit

Mission: A Reef Ball is an artificial reef module that imitates the appearance and function of natural coral reefs, a coral seed. The Reef Balls have openings and canals that make up an ideal living environment for a great variety of marine species. Special concrete mix, with a pH similar to seawater, assures compatibility with the ocean. The Reef Balls vary in composition, thickness, size and height, so that each module is different for various goals and applications, just like natural reefs. Varying surface patterns and textures enhance marine life settlement. Reef Balls are extremely stable because eighty percent of the ball's weight is within one foot of the bottom outside edge. This results in a greater ability to withstand movement and destruction during storms. Reef Balls are superior to other artificial reefs because of their stability and they do not leach. Over 100,000 Reef Balls have been deployed worldwide in over 1,000 different projects. We have two major grant programs, Reefs Around The Nation and Reefs Around The World that provide schools, other non-profit groups, clubs and other environmental interests with the molds and training needed to build and deploy Reef Balls in there areas. See our website, www.reefball.org for a complete listing of all our works.
Description: The Reef Ball Foundation works with governments, businesses, schools, research institutes, and community organizations. Programs range from coral restoration, habitat restoration, mitigation, and marine sanctuaries to public educational projects and corporate sponsorship programs. Through our grant program, Reefs Around The World, we provide Reef Ball molds and Reef Balls to projects for the public good. Educational programs include Adopt A Reef Ball, school project kits to build an aquarium size Reef Ball, public speakers and seminars, and lesson plans. These educational programs heighten community awareness to the importance of preserving our ocean ecosystems by bringing together community organizations, schools, and businesses to participate in Reef Ball programs. These programs benefit school children, the community and most of all, our environment.
