Thirty Privacy Coalition members sent a letter to President-elect Barack Obama on the importance of protecting privacy in the next administration. The organizations support the incoming president’s expressed position on privacy, consumer rights, and civil liberties. President-elect Obama stated support for strengthening of privacy protection by harnessing the power of technology to hold government and businesses accountable for violations of personal privacy.

"US privacy advocates should be thrilled with President-elect Obama's reference to Justice Brandeis and the importance of state experimentation. We have battled industry groups that go to Washington, DC to overturn good state privacy laws. That's why 'preemption' is bad for consumers is against the spirit of federalism that the President-elect invoked!
