Heart disease is the #1 leading killer of Americans and people worldwide. Over 80,000,000 Americans suffer from cardiovascular disease and ~1,000,000 Americans die from heart disease and stroke every year. Worldwide, over 17,000,000 people die from heart attacks and strokes per year.

Annually heart disease and strokes cost the U.S. >$350,000,000,000. The global burden of cardiovascular disease all in all costs society $1,000,000,000,000 ($1 trillion) per year!

The Nurses' Health Study I and II and Health Professionals Followup Study (of Brigham and Women's Hospital) consist of ~300,000 women and men and followed for 20-30 years and are among the largest and most comprehensive studies in the world studying the causes and prevention approaches to heart disease and stroke.

The NHS was also the first spearhead study to directly link trans-fat intake and increased risk of heart disease and has continuously furthered the research into trans-fat; and its research findings has been the primary basis of the New York City trans-fat ban.

However, due to highly limited funding for medical research in recent years, research dollars from public donations are becoming ever more critical to continuing the vital research.
