As stated in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Articles 1 and 4): "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights," and "No one shall be held in slavery or servitude." Moreover, as stated in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Article 2): "All appropriate measures [should be taken] to ensure that the child is protected against all forms of discrimination or punishment on the basis of the status, activities, expressed opinions, or beliefs of the child's parents, legal guardians or family members." The Kamlari system in rural Nepal, whereby poor families are pressured by hardship to sell their daughters as indentured laborers is an affront to all of humanity. Nepal Orphans Home, together with Society Welfare Action Nepal, is committed to rescuing Kamlari girls and ultimately ending this abhorrent practice.
